Could current students post what essentials we will need for dormrooms/ desks/etc. like lamps or supplies or whatever you found useful and what you recommend is absolutly necessary? Or if anyone has a thorough "To Bring" list that would be great as well. Thank you!

WHAT TO BRING

Bring your own towels, pillows, linens to fit an extra long twin bed (36" x 80"), and a non-halogen desk lamp. You may also bring a telephone, stereo, television, clock, fan, computer, print, power strip/surge protector, and a mini-vacuum.

WHAT NOT TO BRING

Due to fire insurance and health and safety requirements, the following items are not allowed in your room or building:

halogen lamps
coffee makers
hot water dispensers
toasters
toaster ovens
freestanding microwaves*
an appliance with open coils
candles
gas stoves
barbecues
any flammable materials
electric space heaters
waterbeds
materials to make lofted beds
dartboards

Due to limited electrical capacity, you may not have a separate microwave. However, you may want to rent a MicroFridge which is a combination microwave and refrigerator. Visit www.collegefridge.com/ucla for more information.

Students may not bring or maintain pets or animals of any kind in the residence halls. Fish are an exception, but the tank must not exceed 10 gallons.

i was about to copy/paste the same thing namaste...beat me to it.

question: can you bring your own fridge or do you have to rent the micro?

BTW, about the animals... they only tend to worry about mammals. If you have a tank with those little turtles/frogs, you'll probably be fine.

you can buy your own fridge, but then you can't have a microwave because they don't allow "freestanding microwaves". however, you can just cover your microwave with a towel if you decide to get one that's freestanding.

Yeah it's not exactly hard to hide things for inspections.

It's kind of dumb. They might as well not do them.

Well, you'd be amazed how many flagrant violations they do actually catch.

Hell, even yours truly got caught once.

Does anyone know if an air popcorn popper would be allowed?

how much does a microwave cost for rent at ucla? do most people rent 1 or what do they do?

I don't think you can rent stand-alone microwaves, only microfridges.

collegegirlgirl - it's $194.85 to rent one for the year excluding tax
<3

It'd be ironic if they rented out the very things they prohibit.

i heard they can't remove flagrant items, and that they just tell you to get remove them.

do most people rent microfridges? anyone ever seen anyone with microwaves in their rooms?

jam3rz,

They can't do anything directly per se, but they certainly can make your life hell for not removing said item. Either that or they can remove YOU.

collegegirlgirl,

Yes, most people will have a microfridge.

i'm thinking about a microwave...any commentS?

Be prepared to hide it all the time.

And if you get caught with it, don't whine and don't pass off blame to a roommate.

I personally just recommend you get a microfidge. Where are you going to keep the food you microwave anyway?

Most floors or buildings will have a common microwave. That's what I used when I was in the dorms (also note I used the microwave rarely). At worse case scenario you'll probably have a friend with a microfridge and can just ask to use their microwave. I recommend bringing your own fridge and using those other microwaves, especially if you already have a mini fridge at home. It's cheaper, more flexible, and you can still use it once you move out. I don't see the obsession with having a microwave in your room anyway. Not only don't you need to use it too often, it also makes your room smell when cooking food.

collegegirlgirl, my roommate actually brought a microwave last year for our room... We generally kept it unplugged, covered and under her bed. However, I never really like the idea of having the microwave primarily because there are many other microwaves available for use. Also, we rarely used the thing since we both had the 19-meal plan and didn't do too much extra eating in our room. But, if you do decide to bring one just be sure to have it hidden most of the time. On that note, I have a funny story... as I've mentioned before here, I was a housing tour guide this past spring quarter and it just so happened that my roomie had left the microwave sitting on top of our fridge (she had used it the night before to make some tea.) I brought my tour group into my room and as I started explaining the things that are against housing regulations I spotted the microwave and the horrified look on my roomie's face. As you can imagine, I muttered something about pretending it was a microfridge and quickly changed the subject. Luckily, my roommate hid it before the next group came in. Anyway, this is also another reason why I never really liked having the microwave - if we wanted to use it, we had to drag it out and then put it back afterwards which, in our case, took a little more effort than walking down the hallway to use a microwave...
