what to bring?

as i've only spent a few days in claremont, i'm not so sure what kind of clothes i should pack for college. when i visited in april, it got pretty cold at night, but i'm from tennessee, so i have a lot of bulky sweaters that i'm not so sure i'll ever use if i do bring them (and i'm trying to pack as little as possible). anybody have any advice on this?

It can get down to about 40 or even a little below during the night in the winter. I'd say bring a bulky sweater or two, but since you're trying to save space both in packing and in your dorm room, I wouldn't bring all of them. If you have nonbulky, light sweaters, bring those; that is about the level of warmth you will need in the winter, most of the time.

Remember you can always have your parents send stuff later on if you need it.

Another thing I found was that I didn't need very many pairs of socks, because i was wearing flip flops/other sandals even in the winter a lot of the time. So, even if I went 3 weeks without doing laundry, I'd have only used like 5 pairs of socks. So if you have a lot of socks, you can probably leave some at home, unless you need them for sports or if you prefer real shoes even in warm weather.

rhs, don't listen to that rookie.

Bring as many socks/boxers as possible. why? they are the only things that dictate when you have to do laundry. and socks require very little room.

A hoodie is all you will need for warmth, maybe a good fleece. Other then that, shorts sandels, t-shirts and a fan is all you need.

Rookie, eh? I spent 4 years at Pomona, and I'm still a rookie?

I'm a girl, though, so I guess I'm somewhat uninitiated about guy stuff.

while not contesting Irene's seniority, I seriously doubt you'll need bulky sweaters. I'm from sunny northern CA and I never felt that cold at Pomona. It gets cool but not freezing.

I think tomadog02's advice is about right tho.

I gotta vote with the lighter clothing contingent. The Claremont area is quite warm August through Octoberish and a little cool perhaps in November, December. BTW if you're in Mudd-Blaisdell you'll have a/c, otherwise, bring a fan for the Aug-September heat.

In January and February, even March you can get some rain. April and May are pretty mild 70ish degrees. This last year was unusually very rainy (jan-april), but still NOWHERE near "east coast" kinda cold. A light jacket/sweater/sweatshirt should do it.

dress in general is very casusal.

I stand by my previous post. The average low in Jan is 42 degrees; record lows have been down in the mid 20s, and in my time there they were certainly in the mid 30s. Twice, it snowed on campus, though it didn't stick. To me, that means that one should bring a bulky sweater or two, as I said above. Do you guys not wear bulky sweaters, or indeed, coats, in 35 degree weather? I do. Obviously, for most of the school year, you will not use it, which is why I said to bring only one or two. Also if you ever go hiking/camping in the mountains, it can be much cooler up there.

Oh yeah, it gets COLD in the mountains.........I was there in late July and I couldn't sleep cause I didn't bring a warm enough sweater and coat. Of course you have to pack really light when you're backpacking, you have much more room when you're packing for college.

Yes it gets cold in the mountains, but that is not the campus/city of claremont.
As far as the city of claremont/campus:
In Jan-March the average LATE night temp is about 45+. Anything below that is so rare that it isn't worth mentioning. In Jan-March the average day time temp is about 68. In april-May the range is about 55-78 and in Sept-October the range is 60-85+ The weather is simply wonderful. You get some smog/haze in the summer, but school is out then.

Snow?????????? on campus. they truck it in for snow day. there may be frost on the ground once in a while, but snow in Socal may happen once every several decades. Temps in the 20's and 30's are so rare i think dinosaurs were around the last time it happened.

ummm.... are you calling me a liar? or a dinosaur? i was THERE. it snowed. it was this millennium.

according to weather.com, the average low in january is 42 (as i said above). it's 41 in december, and 44 in february. those are AVERAGES-- obviously every year is going to vary somewhat, so one should be prepared for it to be somewhat cooler or warmer. daytime temps are significantly higher-- average 68 in january, but most college students are nocturnal creatures and thus go about at night. perhaps the last couple years have been warmer. i don't know, i graduated in '03. all i'm saying is that one should bring an ITEM OR TWO of warm clothing.

Irene- nothing personal to you, just a little poetic license to make the point.
But, IMO describing/discussing the weather in Claremont by referencing snow and temps in the 20's and 30's is just simply and completely unrepresentative of the area. Those events are so totally rare and atypical that there is no reason to prepare for or consider them. Bottom line you are correct an item or two of warm clothing would be appropriate.

i heard that Wig Hall got air conditioning this summer... true or false?

False, but the interior looks great! D is living in Wig.

bullwinkle--- Ah, poetic license, I see. I think you and I are answering 2 different questions. You are answering the question "what is the weather like in Claremont?" whereas I am answering "How cold does it get?" Of course, if someone said "what is the weather like in Claremont," I would say, "WARM." But that wasn't the OP's question.

Anyway, yeah, we basically agree on the advice for the OP.
