OK, this is a little stupid, but one of the schools Im applying to requires a diversity statement asking about things like overcoming challenges and having unique experiences. Now technically Im a minority, so I could write about that. But it doesnt really feel special enough since lots and lots of minorities apply every year, and its not really challenging in any way (at least, it wasn't for me). The one thing that makes me really unique is that I graduated from college a year after my high school graduation. Would writing about this in my diversity statement be considered bragging, or is it just getting some hard earned mileage out of a truly unique and challenging experience? Im not sure where the line is, or if there is one.

I don’t think diversity statements are even a “little stupid.” Just take a specific instance of adversity in your life, expand on it and relate it to your future goals. It doesn’t have to be special or unique. The way to make it stand out is to be specific in your story and clearly link that experience with how you will succeed in grad.
