I'm a high school junior and I am prospective about majoring in graphic design, illustration, or animation. However my mother is urging me to change my mind and go into medicine or computer programming.

I like art, but a lot of my friends say that I "do not seem like an artist." My sister says I do, though. I CAN major in biology or psychology, but I feel like I'll regret it a lot. Same for art. I can see myself regretting going to an art school instead of pursuing in something else. I like everything but I don't know what I love...

I'm just really pessimistic. What should I do? Should I major in biology or psychology and after I graduate, apply for an art school? Or should I go to a liberal arts college and get a double degree?

Also I post art online, which is like cartoony doodles and illustrations and so far nobody on the internet likes them, lol. But is that even parallel to if college admissioners or the public will like my more serious stuff? I have had some portfolio reviews, and some of them went pretty well, especially the one with MICA.

So this is mostly a rant about my life. Some advice or many some stats about unemployment in majors and salaries would be nice. Thanks again!

How about a double major? Would you be HAPPY as an only premed/bio student? Would you be happy with a double major?

I’ll say right now that unless you’re planning pursuing education after your undergrad years, a degree in psychology is virtually useless.

Yeah I’ve heard bad things about psychology!

Premed/bio was one of my choices but over the years I started to drift away from it. I’m good at science but I’m not great at it. I usually only understand things through memorization; I don’t get it, I just know that it’s the right answer.

I don’t really want to double major. If I am doing art, I don’t want to do biology then because biology will only serve as a major that will satisfy my mom’s wants.

You can always take art classes at electives, or do some art minor.

Then I’d say major in the artistic medium of your choice. It’s about what will make you happy.
Are there any non-artistic fields of study that you’d be genuinely happy with?

Well, while happiness is important, I don’t think it is the first priority. Remember, a job is a job, not necessarily a hobby. It’s foremost purpose is to make money so you can live comfortably and then be happy. If a job can make you happy AND make money, then you’ve hit the jackpot, but it’s realistically very hard to find such a job.

So my 2 cents is pick a strong job major like science as long as you like it just a little. Cause that should be enough. On the side you can take art classes. If there’s a science discipline that has artistic elements to it and is also a fruitful college major - then you’ve hit the jackpot :D

@Horsey7959 - I am interested in HUGE variety of things! However, the one that interests me the most is probably marine biology or any biology that involves animals. Lol.

@CrazyPluto - thank you for the advice! After some thought I might as well just see how things go. Maybe I’ll go into art or I’ll go into science. My plan is to apply for two types of schools and see which ones look better.

Double major graphic design and computer science, you will make bank. Don’t be lazy, if you want to make money with an art major you are going to need make sacrifices.
