what to do after admission?

so I applied to six cuny college using the cuny portal. I payed the fee with cc. Now is asking to submit supporting docs. On the cuny portal notice, it says: The City University of New York requires SAT or ACT scores for entering freshmen applying for admission to a Baccalureate Program. Unfortunately, we cannot consider you for admission to a Baccalureate program until you forward your SAT or ACT scores. You may submit your scores in one of the following ways…

  1. I took the SAT on NOV and scored pretty low and consider retaking it again 1/24/15(this weekend). Is it too late to submit SAT score after the 1/24/15 test? So is application incomplete without a sat submission and must submit my NOV one?
  1. Transcript, this is another concern. I input my osis number into the form, do I still need to mail my transcript?
  2. Teacher Recommendation and Essay: I read online, I can send essay to individual college online or mail them. Don't even know where to get a teacher recommendation letter, what do I need before asking a teacher to write me one? Does the teacher send the letter directly to the office?
  3. Financial AID: I know FAFSA and TAP provide them. After I apply, how do I use it? When should I apply? Also, when should I receive email whether I get accepted or declined?

Thanks for all the help, I tried asking around school and people gave me different answers, thats why I want to try online.

don’t you have a guidance counselor at your HS?

I do, but my friends is telling me something different from my guidance. So it make me confuse. Some of the question I didn’t get a chance to ask yet until I encounter them right now.

You’re trusting your friend who is in HS with you over your GC who has been through this before?

I agree with the previous commentators that your guidance counselor should be your first point of reference. At my school we had a college/career counselor, so if your school has that they would be of more help since they are more likely to know your specific situation.
I will try to be of some help though:

  1. It depends on the deadlines of the colleges you applied to; some will let you send in test scores and some will not. It is best to call the schools and ask.
  2. My school had the option to mail/email transcripts to our colleges for us. Check to see if your school does that and call the colleges/check online to see if they have received your
  3. It is not a good idea to ask teachers to write you a letter without giving them at least 2 weeks notice before you need the letter, so make sure that you give the teachers enough time to write a proper letter. You should go to teacher's that you have a good relationship with and also give them an academic resume (gpa, rank, AP/SAT/IB scores, volunteer work, honors received, etc) so that they can include that in the letter.
  4. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this one, but when you fill out your FAFSA (it is online through their website) you list the schools that you want the information sent to and then the schools will award your financial aid via that information. Always get your financial aid stuff done as soon as possible because the longer you wait the less money they will have available to award you. It is usually recommended that you complete everything before a specific date in February; I think it is Feb. 15? The website is very straight forward. I do not know what TAP is. Furthermore, every school has different times for when they reveal their choices and it is usually listed somewhere on their websites.

Hope this was helpful!

You need your GC’s help with this. Pay no attention to what your friends advise because they can’t submit the documents the colleges want. Your GC has to do that. The CUNY website explains the materials they want. Their website is: http://cuny.edu/admissions/undergraduate/afteryouapply/after-you-apply-freshman.html

  1. SAT scores: Are you applying to 4-year CUNYs? SAT and/or ACT scores are required for the 4-year schools. Their minimum CR score is 480, and their minimum math score is 500, so if your Nov. scores are at or above those, then I'd send them. If not, send the scores from this weekend's test. As long as your application was in by the Feb. 1 deadline, the supplemental materials can follow. But since CUNYs are on rolling admissions, some programs may close out. See http://www.cuny.edu/academics/testing/cuny-assessment-tests/admissions-requirements.html for SAT information.
  2. High school transcript: Your GC (NOT you) must send an official copy of your transcript. There's a special form the college requires them to fill out that has to be attached to it. Your GC has probably done it many times. Take your school list to him/her and request that your transcripts be sent to those colleges.
  3. Teacher Recs: Check the school websites to see how many recs they require. Some want one, but others require two. Find a teacher who knows you well and who you think would give you a good recommendation. Ask him/her if s/he would write one and make sure they know how soon the school wants it. If you ask now, they might be able to have one completed by mid-February. Give your teacher(s) a list of your activities, test scores, GPA, ECs, etc. so they can refer to it when they write the letter. Ask your GC how to submit these letters to the colleges.
  4. FAFSA and TAP: Fill the FAFSA out now. On the last page is a link to the TAP website. Make sure you follow the link and fill that out as well or you'll have to go to the HESC website and fill out all your financial information again. Because the schools have a rolling admissions deadline, notification dates are also on a rolling basis. The students who have all their documentation in first are considered first and others on a space available basis.

Again, I can’t stress enough that you should go to your guidance counselor’s office today and discuss the admissions process. Do not depend on your friends or asking around campus. The colleges want the documentation from your school, and the office that handles that is your GC. Good luck.
