shopping... well, I don'ty shop. What are you looking for? There's target / walmart, outlets, high priced touristy stuff.

food... there's a couple places right across the street from campus. There's all the places in Colonial Williamsburg, Cheese Shop is very popular with students. There's plenty of fairly expensive places to take advantage of when parents come to visit.

thrift shops... there's a couple. We got a couch at one.

-shopping (New Town has Old Navy and it's about a couple miles away; the Prime Outlets are down Route 60 about 5 miles off campus; Target is about 2 miles away, and the Walmart is near Route 199 and about 5-6 miles away)
-food (Richmond Road has a lot of restaurants, A Mongolian BBQ Buffet is about a mile or so off campus. The Delis are all across Blow)
-entertainment (New Town has a theater. Zable Stadium has football, but the team fell off the map since the 2004 Final Four run.)
-thrift shops (There are some, but I've never been to them)
-etc. (No Best Buy or Circuit City until you're in Newport News about 20 miles away.)

In all honesty, your options are going to be somewhat limited unless you either bring a car or make friends with someone who has one. There are a few options near campus as mentioned above. The delis are close enough, and there are a few decent places to eat in CW as well. Shopping and entertainment are a different story. The shopping close to campus is pretty much limited to expensive shops for tourists on DoG Street. Likewise, entertainment in Colonial Williamsburg is pretty limited, seeing as how... Colonial Williamsburg is the entertainment.

You can always take the bus. The Red Line goes to New Town, which offers a movie theater and more shopping and dining options (Panera!). However, the bus doesn't run at all on Sundays, and every other day the last stop at New Town is before 7:30 PM. Many students (mostly unsuspecting freshmen, during the first few weeks of school) have gone to see a movie on a Friday night only to find themselves walking all the way back because the bus had stopped running.

Bottom line: If you're resourceful (and mindful of the bus schedules), you can find things to do off campus. But it really helps to have a car at your disposal.

the bus lines' last route starts at 7 PM in the non-summer months (b/w memorial day and labor day). that kinda sucks

Going to W&M is like to going to college in a classic movie or a book. It's a great experience. Teachers are accessible, students are friendly and the campus is beautiful. WHile there may not always be a tons of things going on around the town, students are super involved on campus. There are a wide variety of clubs and activities, sporting events etc. Also, with as difficult WM is the lack of distractions can be a plus.
