I just found out that my son’s school does not list class rank on the official transcript. He is an OOS applicant and rank is very important for admission. How should we report his rank to UT?
If a rank isn’t provided, they’ll estimate one for him
based on GPA. If it helps, rank is only a huge requirement for in state students because of Texas’s top ten rule. Obviously it’ll still be a consideration, but less so for OOS.
Do they rank and just not put it on the transcript or are they non-ranking? If there is another document where rank is reported, you can upload it in MyStatus.
They rank but just not putting it on the transcript.
If they put it in writing, I would scan it as a pdf and load it as an “other document.” I’d especially do it if the rank is very good. If it is outside top 10 percent or so, I might take my chances on letting UT assign a rank instead.
For OOS, we were told during the application process that high test scores, high GPA and the other holistic factors were more important than the class rank. The opposite of how auto-admit worked.
Just want to pass on the information to you all. I called the admission office, they are very specific on how to report the rank. I am glad I called. The counselor will have to write the letter and address specific issue in the letter. UT does not “estimate” your rank.
@realchk They absolutely do if your school doesn’t rank. You didn’t specify whether or not they did in your original post, and there are schools that simply don’t rank their graduating classes, so UT has to estimate it. That wasn’t the case for your school.
The HS counselor may at many high schools–including non-ranking schools–provide a “school report” with every transcript request. The school report puts the school and student in context, so prospective colleges can better understand how well a particular student has been doing at the HS relative to the school’s circumstances / focus / curriculum.
