Can you have your guidance counselor help you get on touch with someone there? Often grown ups will be more willing to deal with another grown up - sad but true.

Please don’t be too nice and/or too patient trying to fix this. Also do not flip and become a jerk but become your own biggest advocate. If you were my kid I suggest that you
- Call the head of financial aid one more time (do not settle for a subordinate … explaining you have called x times not getting much help so far)
- If you do not get through to the head of financial aid live on that first call then immediately start calling other people who can help you … the head of admissions would be my first choice … or maybe the dean of students?

(hmm … actually reading this … if the call does not work … I would recommend email the head of financial aid explaining the problem and CC the head of admissions and the dean of students (or maybe the president of the school).)

It’s not your fault and it seems you’re stuck in admin he** … so you need to force them to deal with you … be fair, be respectful, be truthful, and be forceful.

Good luck!

Don’t do this! Right now, because you haven’t submitted your deposit, you’ve got leverage. Once you send in your deposit, financial aid has no real reason to help you.

Try contacting your admissions representative for your geographical area. Call the admissions office to ask for help if you don’t know your rep’s name. If they’re out of the area, ask the admissions office for help.

Emory is rather good with need-based aid, and they don’t play the financial enrollment game.

I suggest you send Admissions an e-mail and explain your situation: That your parents don’t speak English very well, that they had some help in completing the Profile, and that you have looked at it after-the-fact and found some errors. Tell them that you will immediately fax in the corrections for financial aid to update/process your estimated award.

Tell them that Emory is still your first choice, if the finances can be worked out, and then ask for an extension of time to send in your deposit.

Do you live near Emory University? Maybe it would be most effective if you and your parents were to physically go to the financial aid office and meet with a financial aid counselor or the director?

I live in New York so my parents won’t be able to go down there.
As for the CSS error. I called collegeboard and they told me that for that particular section I would have to notify the college and there would be no need to fax corrections to the collegeboard. The person whom I notified about the fin aid told me that he noted it down (he is the assistant director)
Going to speak with my guidance counselor about it tomorrow and see if she can help

That is correct. Once you file Profile, CB is done. Any changes/updates to the original submission must be sent to the individual colleges.

j0hn3ny This sounds nightmarish!! I agree with the other posters. Be firm, consistent, insistent, and respectful, it will work out.
I’ve also heard Emory gives wonderful need-based aid so hopefully this will be cleared up quickly!
