What-to-do for Mediocre MIT Student

Hello,

I'm an undergrad student at MIT, majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in management. After graduation, ideally, I would like to continue on with my MechE masters at MIT but then would like to go to either Harvard Business of MIT Sloan. The problem is that I did very poorly at MIT- my first year, earning mostly Cs (and 1 D!!!), while the following semesters were straight Bs, though in more challenging classes so there was definitely an improvement there; though still not stellar by any means.

I am very involved in student leadership and have a bit of consulting experience (though not in the industry, it's pro-bono, and student run.) What should I do to get into these programs? I would like to be an entrepreneur one day and if that doesn't work, climb the corporate ladder of an engineering firm. I am interested in Operations and Management in general.

I am very worried because my GPA is very low. What should I do to stand out/improve my chances?

I realize I must sound very whiny. I apologize. Thank you very much.

I thought freshman year grades don’t count towards gpa

^^w.t.f???

MBA applicants don’t need a high GPA. If you are doing a master’s, that counts a lot more and your work experience and GMAT even more.

First semester is taken P/NP (does not count for GPA)
Second semester you can only get an A, B, or C. Ds and Fs are hidden and do not count for GPA.

I’m assuming this has not changed from earlier class years.

Wow does any other school have that? I hope my school does lol
