What to do for Out of State

How do out of state students that aren't brain-childs get into Chapel Hill? Is there a certain type of out of state student that they like, or are they just looking for diversity?

no way. im out of state and i do not really know a mold that they look for. being well rounded with a couple of outstanding attributes that make you stand out is probably the only thing i can tell you. you certainly seem to have to be better than the average in state applicant. its not fair but its not made to be either.

Since 80% of the accepting freshman must be instate, you really have to be on top of your game in all areas if you're going to apply OOS.

I think the most important factor is the essay...
I got a likely letter when my ACT is below the standard...

they ask for like 3 essays, so essays are an imperative factor on the admission process. In other words, the essays fascilitate the admission process and distinguish the accepted ones from the rest.

I agree... the most outstanding feature of my D's application were her essays... Make your essay inteligent, interesting, and different.

Don't assume that high SAT scores, excellent essays, or great recommendations will trump your GPA.

UNC is looking for the WHOLE package. You have to stand out, i am sure diversity helps, overcoming adversity, being a leader, start a club, get great recs, have decent SAT scores, show that you have taken tough classes. They can basically consider ANYTHING on your application. Use the extra essay question to explain your desire adn willingness to work hard, adversity you have overcome etc. They hand read all applications and now they are up to 22,000.

For OSS, it also is easier to go to another college and apply as a sophomore if you really want to get in. They are not as limited with spots for transfers.

Think about it. Most everyone on these boards have great stats. SAT's and GPA's so what is it that is different? ESSAYS and EC's. Get the service hours in and join clubs and get involved. Don't video game all weekend, do something! On your essay the Admissions people could care less what you think about global warming or the war in Iraq. They want to hear about YOU! So write about you and what makes you tick or something you have had to overcome to be successful at something. I get paid the same amount if you heed my advice or not. $0. So there it is. Good Luck!
