Here is my current situation, I have a 3.96 GPA at this moment but that could possibly be going down slightly in the near future due to the 19 credit course load I am taking right now. I am currently on track to graduate with an a degree in Mechanical Engineering in three years with one and a half more years to go. I see myself having two main options to choose from, graduate with a BS in ME in 1.5 years and go to work or do the BS/MS program my school offers which would add another year on to my schooling (2.5 years). One problem that I am currently facing is that I am currently lacking job experience and am having a hard time landing a summer internship which I feel is very important to have if I am going to be graduating next school year. I am not sure what to do and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I asked a similar question about my son (also a MechE) and got some very good advice on this thread - they all brought up some interesting points to consider that were very helpful. Hope this helps you as well <a href=“Best end game: Masters, PhD or stick with Bachelors? - Engineering Majors - College Confidential Forums”>Best end game: Masters, PhD or stick with Bachelors? - Engineering Majors - College Confidential Forums;

As for summer internships, last year my son did not secure his until the spring career fair, so it is still early in the game to be overly worried about this summer just yet. However, it might pay to look into research opportunities also…?

Personally, I think it’s best to work a few years (at least a year) to get a feel for what you like to do, before specializing in something. For me anyway, real-world engineering was very different from what I experienced in school. After about a year of working, I got a much better idea of what to do for my MS degree.

Your grades are excellent and as such (assuming you have decent interviewing skills) I don’t think you will have any problem finding an entry level engineering position after graduation. Don’t procrastinate on the job search though… start looking at least a couple of months before you plan to graduate.
