What to do if Deferred: NEW POLL ADDED!

I have never seen anything from Harvard that says that only 4% of those deferred eventually get in. I have seen that stat quoted on CC, but no one has cited a source. I suspect that it is simply a myth.

As I have mentioned before, the students who get in EA are the ones that Harvard adcoms feel would definitely make the cut once the RD applicant pool is in, too. Thus, only students who are clearly head and shoulders above the average Harvard admitted students and/or students who have some highly desired, unusual talent/diversity issue (including being from underrepresented regions and socioeconomic groups) are going to be admitted EA.

Many outstanding students will be deferred, and some of these outstanding students will eventually be admitted.

"I have never seen anything from Harvard that says that only 4% of those deferred eventually get in."

really??? oh my hopes are up now. so the one who gets in EA are the clear admits... is it true to say that most (if not all) of the solid contenders will be deferred? and is there any stat about the admit rate of EA deferrees?

Are Harvard adcoms in any way biased by the fact that they already deferred you when they reread your application for regular action?

how can they be biased? Deferred means they couldn't come to a decision. So now they will be forced to during RD; if anything they'll be more likely to accept you since they looked at you before and you were decent enough to not be rejected, although this really doesn't apply to Harvard, since they defer a massive amount.

Every college counselor I have ever spoken to says that a greater percentage of EA deferrals get in the regular applicants.

*than the regular applicants

Try not to worry too much -- there is still hope!

Hey,

After I was deferred, my counselor called the admissions office to ask why I didn't get in. Is this going to hurt my chances for RD? You said not to call the admissions office for at least a month, which I would never do anyway, but after reading what you said I'm kinda worried that this might keep me from getting accepted. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Can someone clarify something please: Are later accepted EA deferrals counted towards the RD or EA statistics?

I think they count as RD acceptees since that's the pool they ended up in.

if you didn't get into harvard, you aren't qualified enough to get in. it is as simple as that. be realistic.

Keynes: Do you mind answering my earlier question about what the H adcom said regarding your application?

Also...I really doubt that it will hurt your admission status for your GC to call the admissions office. Honestly, I bet many GCs do that. In fact, in the book "The Gatekeepers", the GC for some students called their reach schools regarding admission, and that had no negative affect. So don't worry.

Actually I bet 90% of all applicants to Harvard are QUALIFIED, and I think most adcoms would agree. However there are applicants more qualified than others. Most people applying have at least a 1400, so everyone would be fine at Harvard, it's just a matter who would do BETTER.

In recent years, deferred EA applicants have been admitted at roughly the same rate as RD applicants.

Obviously the admit rate is lower than for EA, but hundreds of EA deferreds may yet make it.

to Keynes:
Like destinypath said, don't worry about this. However, calling at this point will most likely not help your chances (or give you access to information that would) either. Again, don't worry.

Thanks for the reassurance! I haven't spoken with my counselor yet about what the admissions officer said. He has no idea why I didn't get in, but after reading the numbers and activities of everyone in this forum who got deferred, we both understand to a greater extent the competition that we are all really up against. Anyways, I'll be sure to let everyone know what the admissions officer said after I find out. Thanks.

Would it be beneficial to send another recommendation? The (common) app said they just wanted two teacher recommendations, and both of my were good, but there is at least one more person I would like to have a rec from, and he is very articulate and could talk more about character, drive, etc. Would this help in any way? I think I'll send an "updated" resume (too lazy to put accent), and perhaps another essay, but right now I think a better rec. would be the most helpful. Should I do it?

I got deferred... and I'm just disappointed. In a sense, I was expecting to get deferred because Harvard is really only the best school in the nation.. but in a way, I was hoping to get in, because I really tried hard, to the point that you can't even imagine. I mean, I moved to America with an okay English and in 3 1/2 years now, I'm a full IB Diploma candidate, 7th in class, and I feel like I've accomplished so much yet... not good enough for Harvard. But anyway.... a few questions...

1) would it be a good idea to get my counselor to call Harvard and ask why I did not get in or at least let them know that Harvard still is my first choice no matter what? or would it be better to wait till like February when this angry phone call wave kinda ceases? but then I don't want to wait till like two months after my deferral letter to let them know about it...

2) would it be a good idea to ask/talk to my interviewer about this deferral?

3) would it be okay to send in a better essay if we'd like? in that case... what exactly happens... would the admissions office just throw away my old one, never read that one, and just read my newly sent in essay? or would they read all of them? or is this sending in a new essay not allowed?

4) so i've read all the posts and i heard different things... so do i still have a fair amount of chance of getting into harvard after getting deferred as opposed to others applying regular decision?

5) exactly what percent of the people are rejected and deferred? because i always thought that only a small percent of people gets rejected and the majority gets deferred... but then i also heard that only a small percentage of people are deferred and a lot of people are rejected. which statemnet is true?

So I got deferred from Harvard EA. I'm pretty disappointed but I guess... it is Harvard after all. So looking at my brief info, do you think I was anywhere close to being accepted? ie, do you think I'm anywhere close to being accepted in April through RD?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh aaaaaaand yeah.
any comments would be grateful as long as they dont come along too harsh...

Is it possible for me to resubmit my application? I feel that I would have a better chance if they simply tossed out my old application.

Right now my application is in an utter mess. I have updated them like three times and so different parts of my application have different things. I'm pretty sure that it is extremely confusing for adcoms to read. I also would like to edit my awful essays that I sent to Harvard.

same question, is there anyway to simply resent an application to a school? My GC sent my transcripts etc., i just want to resend the student portion.
