What to do if waitlisted, and manual v. automatic

I am waitlisted for two classes (German r5a and american studies 10). I was wondering now, what action, if any, am I supposed to take. I heard that you are supposed to email the professor? What do I say? What is the difference between manual and automatic? Also if anyone has any idea of what my chances are of getting into these classes? For german i am numner 10 on the waitlist and its a class of only 17. American studies has a limit of 107 but currently has open seats. I am still on the waitlist though, I am assuming this is because there are limitations....

Thanks!

bump. help please?

You’re not going to get into German since they take usually 0-2 people from the waiting list. You do have a good change of getting into American Studies so stick with that. Emailing the professor isn’t going to help since they’re just going to tell you that they go by the waitlist. (If this were a graduate class and you had something to bring to the table, that might be a different story, but in almost all cases the waitlist is the deciding factor.) Do note that it’s not as straightforward as “person number 3 on the WL will be the 3rd person to get in.” That being said a good rule of thumb is to take the class size * 0.15 and if your WL position is less than that you still have a reasonable chance.

i am also waitlisted in german studies r5a (#5). Assuming I don’t get in, would it be wise for me to take my r&c later on. I already have 15 units planned. Should I keep Italian Studies r5a for a total of 18 units (already enrolled, but heard it was harder than german and timing not as favorable)

you have plenty of opportunities to take it later on. just hold off on it and if you can’t get in next year, then maybe settle for a more difficult one.

Italian Studies R5A isn’t very hard.
