What to do if you don't go to Orientation?

What do I have to do if I am not signed up for Orientation? Just schedule my classes? (How and when will I be able to do that?) Anything else I will need to make sure to do since I am not attending orientation?

i am not 100% sure, but I think those who do not register in June will register before school starts during August orientation.

does that mean i will be late for signing up for classes, which means i wont get my first choice possibly?

Actually I believe that you get to start signing up July 1, right after orientation closes. I suppose it is possible that you won’t get your first choice regarding what section, but you should get the courses you want. There are rare exceptions, but most students get all the courses they desire, just not always at the times they want. That is the reality for freshmen, it is just something you have to live with for a semester or year, usually. As you become an upperclassman, you get more priority, but of course usually the number of sections for upper level courses are fewer as well. I guess sometimes you cannot win, lol.

When I went for destination Tulane, they told me that they’ll reserve seats for students who can’t sign up during the orientations. They said before last year, the only option was signing up online yourself with an advisor’s assistant over phone/email. So I expect we should be fine with signing up for classes. I won’t be at orientations either, since I’ll be in China! :)

Really? They dont trust us enough to sign up by ourselves online??

well… U kinda need the advisor, or u won’t know what u really need or should take I guess…

So when will we know who our adviser is?

I don’t think they send you that information, although maybe they do if you don’t attend any orientations. In any case, you can e-mail or call the advising center and get help that way.

Yeah, they said they will send the information to students who aren’t attending orientations.

I checked the class schedule on Gibson this afternoon, and it doesn’t look good. Many classes with great professors are already registered… I highly doubt there’ll be any available when it comes to after orientations… I’m thinking whether I should try my best to make time for orientation now! It would be tough, but I don’t want a uninterpretable professor who gives me a D… So, I don’t know, it’s tough!

I thought we dont have to go to orientation to get sign-up priority for classes - and which classes are already full?

I wouldn’t get too worked up just yet. They will probably add additional sections of some of the more popular classes. For example, the current schedule for fall only has Fleury teaching one section of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, but currently this spring, he is teaching two classes. That is probably how they are “reserving spots” for the students who will register during orientation. I know it’s difficult, but you really should try not to worry.

Absolutely agree. Also people change their schedules all the time, and spaces open up.

It is just part of college life virtually everywhere that you will get some sections of classes you didn’t want and some you did. I almost guarantee you will get one prof sometime during your 4 years that you really wish you hadn’t. Again, that is the same everywhere. I agree that you should try and relax. It will all work out.
