What to do if your ACT is a lot higher than SAT

If your ACT is much better than SAT, say 33 ACT and 1980 SAT, are you better off sending only the ACT scores to each school you're applying to. I've heard schools just take the highest and throw out the lower scores, but not sure I see any benefit of sending the lower SAT's. Do any schools take an average?

Also, what conversion tables do schools use? 33 ACT converts roughly to 2180 SAT from what I've seen. So if you submit 33 ACT to a school where most students are submitting SAT's, will the school just convert it to 2180 for purposes of the test portion of the evaluation?

Thanks.

just send the ACT. My son bombed (relatively) the SAT and scored very well on ACT. We just ignored the SAT’s that he took when applying. They don’t need both

Generally, if you send both, colleges will use the one test that is better for you. However, you can send just the ACT and save the money for the SAT unless college requires you to send all SAT and all ACT scores (many of the “all scores” colleges require all SATs or all ACTs but not both but some require both so check for colleges’ rule). As to how the college will convert, it depends on college and it may not do any conversion at all (colleges are familiar with the ACT and know what they expect to see on it even if most applicants supply SAT). As to conversion tables you see on-line, those are guides only as colleges that do a conversion most often have their own tables but it is highly unlikely a 1980 SAT is going to be considered as good as a 33 ACT anywhere.

Note there is one college that is an exception to the above: Rose Hulman; it superscores combined SAT and ACT scores. Thus if it believes, for example, that your SAT math is higher than your ACT math and that your ACT English is higher than your SAT CR, it will use for admission your SAT math and your ACT English (it does not use compoiste or writing for either test, or the science and reading scores from the ACT).

Unless required, send in ACT. Period.

My highest on SAT was 1980. My highest Composite on ACT was 32, superscore 33 (going up though cause I nailed the reading 2 weeks ago).

They won’t exactly convert these scores, but they know which score corresponds to what range on the SATs. So don’t worry, unless required.

Highest ACT: 33
Highest SAT: 1820

Sent Score: 33

Sent Scores to Georgetown: 33 / 1820

If it is required send it.

OP: They do not convert your ACT score, your ACT is your ACT and your SAT is your SAT.
