I'm a college freshman this year, and I'm trying to secure some summer plans. I applied to work at a summer camp, but I'm on the waitlist because they have a lot of returning staff members. I could work at a local fast food place like I did senior year of HS, but I'd rather do something better. Any ideas? What are you guys doing?

I’m taking classes in the summer. If you don’t want to work or take classes you can apply for a summer internship.

Get a job, take classes, go on vacation…

I’m hopefully getting an internship this summer, I’m graduating in December and it’s high time I got one. If that doesn’t work, I’m not sure what I’ll do. Maybe sell all of my stuff and be a fisherman on the New England coast.

You might consider an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates). You get to do research over the summer and they pay you. I don’t know if the deadlines have passed though.

If all else fails, a job is better than nothing. Definitely stop by your college’s career center to see if they can find any internships that would fit you.

Have you considered applying to more than one summer camp?

If you like working with kids, look into Breakthrough Collaborative, Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins, or Duke’s Talent Identification Program.
