what to do with $700 ?

I got a graduation present (cash) !

I don't mean to be pompous at all, just want some advices

from you guys to spend this money effectively for college preparation..

such as electronic devices...any necessary items that are suitable....etc..

it's $700.

Save it if you don't know what else to do with it. Something will come up eventually that you will want.

Set up a savings account. (ING has high interest rates)
http://home.ingdirect.com/

Keep the money for freshman year...dorm stuff, pizza money, trips, holiday presents...you'll find something.

put it in a short term CD

I had a similar dillema after Christmas. I was sitting on $300 and couldn't decide what to do with it. I ended up spending $100 on lottery tickets, donating $100 to my church, and saving the rest for bills and the like. The lottery tickets were a total waste of money as I won only $6. The church donation made me feel good. All this being said, follow these guys advice and just save the money for incidentials at college. If you don't have a laptop already buy one, but otherwise that money will go a long way when you need it in the fall for crap you never figured would cost that much (books, laundry, frat dues etc.)

Send it via paypal to me. >_> It will be well spent.

a very cheap laptop?

Hopefully he has some other money to put with it for the laptop...

If you want the highest savings rate, go with emigrant-direct.com . It is 3.25% vs. 3.00% at ING direct. I would save the cash at emigrant direct, or take some of your other savings and buy a few bonds...talk to your parents about it.

Overall, just save it. YOu never know when you are in college and your friends want to take a weekend trip, when this money can come in handy. Its better to save it and use it later than just spend it now because you have it.

well you could spend it on a laptop, iPod, lot of electronic gadgets or a really personal thing - but i'll advise you to save your money, you never know when you may need money urgently (drugs / books / supplies / clothes /payments ) ...

me and my brother made a cumulative $6000 from our high school graduation party in 2001. We spent nearly all of our share on laptop computers and accessories. If I could do it over again I would have bought a much cheaper desktop and saved the rest for books and miscellaneous expenses.

Damn I need to marry into that family! Got a sister? :)

I badly wanted at least a couple of bucks when I was totally broke.

Now, having 700 bucks, I am quite bewildered by the fact that I do have no

clue where to spend or where to save. I would probably get an ipod for my

own satisfaction, and then......I don't know,,,

buy your ipod and save it.

it will be right in the long run. Instead of racking your brain for how to spend it (and then spending it on something useless), put it in a savings account and wait until a few months of college have passed and then decide if there is anything you would like to have.

if you get an ipod, use the educational discount on the apple site

Ipod, then wait until PS3 comes out...

Buy the book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and it will teach you how to deal with your money.

i would get skydiving certified.. that costs about $1000 though. then after your certified (takes like 7 jumps) you only pay $20 per jump for a lift up to the sky, then the fall is free :D

Do not buy the book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." Do a google search for Kiyosaki, he's a fraud.

First time poster/long time lurker, couldn’t help putting in my two cents b/c I love telling people what to do with their money. Savings account is a good idea, so is stock (one of my associates said her Safeway stock has done well in the last couple months). And if you have anything left over, you can get a Roomba vacuum, which will always give your friends something entertaining to chat about when they come over to visit. Or if you want to go in a completely different direction, why not scrap the notion of “college expenses” altogether and go to South America or Southeast Asia or someplace far away with your handsome gift and get something you can’t quantify as a good value other than a damn good time?

Or how about sending me a fraction so I can have a good time in Struggling Thespian Land?
