What to do with a Biology major?

Biology major here. Tried teaching high school science, then medical research technician. Finally went back to school and became a freelance court reporter. Don’t recommend that, either.

I wish I had either gone to nursing school, though my mother said I hate needles and wouldn’t be able to do it, or become a certified medical laboratory technician. That would have required a nonpaid internship, which I couldn’t afford to do, but wish I had invested that time, as jobs were more available and the pay was twice what a lab research technician was. Believe it or not, my private school science teacher pay was better than the lab technician job. I loved the lab job, but couldn’t pay the rent with it.

I specialized in field work in the Everyglades, and dreamed of working for the department of wildlife and fisheries. I applied, took the civil service test, and never got that job. I only met one person in my state who got the job with a marine science/biology degree from the same college I graduated from, UMiami, but her father was a major political contributor, and her job was bought and paid for. Yep, you guessed it, I’m from Louisiana.
