What to do with a high CR but low writing score?

I'm wondering about sending my recent SAT result to schools? I received a 780 CR score, but a 500 on the writing. This is the 3rd time I've taken the SAT and the 500 is more than 200 points below my other scores. All of my other scores have been fairly consistent across all three test areas. I received a 5 on this essay, whereas on my ACT and other SAT's I've never received less than a 9. I also received a 5 on my AP English exam last year. This test would only raise my superscore by 30 points so I'm thinking about not sending it - simply because the writing score is so poor. Is a 30 point superscore bump worth sending a 500 writing? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Which schools would you be sending this to?

Any ideas as to why you received such a poor score on your essay? Did you just blow it off or write illegibly that day? Based on your previous performance on the SAT and on the AP exam this seems curious to say the least.

You know, I did not blow the writing off and really have no idea. I’m actually looking forward to Nov 2 when the essays are posted to see if I can tell what happened. I’m just in shock. All I can say is at least Math and CR stayed constant from my last test and showed an improvement from my first SAT sitting. I’ll have to send this to my non score choice schools, but otherwise I think I’m going to drop it. Hopefully I can figure out what went so wrong on this one section. It just kills me that I actually scored higher on the writing portion in 7th grade when I took the test for TIP.

A 780 is insanely good, and most colleges dont even look at writing. Your composite score is the most important (M+CR). If that i around 1500 then you have no need to worry.

I wonder if you misread the essay prompt and therefore your essay was a bit off-topic?

Anyway…what schools are you applying to?

What is your best M+CR score from one sitting.

I don’t think your W score is going to matter much because many schools kind of ignore it except maybe for Freshman Comp placement.

BTW…are you testing for AP English (either one)?
