So, I might be majoring in Human Development and Family Science (I’m going to be a sophomore in a week) at my school. The main reason why I am majoring in this is because that it covers most of the pre-reqs that I will need for my top-choice graduate school program. However, I might need to work for a little bit before graduate school to (kinda since it’s tough these days) pay off some of my student loans. My questions are 1) What jobs to HDFS graduates do if Grad School isn’t there for them at the moment? and 2) What minors do HDFS Majors usually work for in order to get these positions, if it matters? Thanks!
Nonprofit sector is one common destination for HDFS majors. Some areas of study that would help you there: statistics, public finance, non-profit management.
Stay open to the possibility that your top choice graduate program will change, though. Any “top choice” that you have before taking any upper-division classes in your major is best considered a provisional choice. Once you actually get into the major, you may discover that your focus goes in a specific direction for which a different program would be a better fit.
Also, you’re smart to plan ahead for the possibility of having to work between your degrees, but keep yourself open as well to the possibility that you will find a funded place in a graduate program that will enable you to continue without pause.
Thank you for that insight. Would you say that HDFS is pretty flexible for most work settings? @DreamSchlDropout
