I've been a member of my school's science club for a couple of years now. Next year I will be the president of the club and I was wondering if any of you had some good ideas as to what I should do with the club. For my duration in the club, its been pretty rough with the club really not doing anything and attendance is very low. The big thing with the club has been to latch ourselves onto a field trip some science teacher organized, and most meetings end up with us doing nothing. Any ideas would be great.

Do you already have an environmental club? Because at my school the environmental club meets every Thursday to take recycling bins out of every classroom, has an Earth Day festival with live music and food, and volunteers at this Carnivore Preserve and an animal shelter. They also take yearly trips to the beach for a clean-up project.

How about JETS www.jets.org or doing one of the many robotics contests? My science/Engineering club did robots the first half of the year and TEAMS competition the second half. The robots really draw in a lot of people who wouldn't join otherwise.

We also have a jets team. To start an environmental club, just like find a teacher who would be willing to be an advisor, get a couple of friends together and petition your principal to make the club official so you get funding and people know about it and so its legit.

~ invite speakers from the local college, or even students who graduated a few months prior and went on in science
~ bring in the science trivial persuit or something similar
~ do some random car building/ catapult making contests and the like
~ go drag out a telescope for a nighttime event, or do the boring sunspot/moon craters/other daytime objects thing during meetings
