I'd like to ask, if I got a B.S. in Economics or Management Science, what jobs could I get coming out of undergrad? I want to go into business, but business schools seem to stipulate a few years of work experience before acceptance. What jobs could I get filling this requirement of work experience?

Also, if having not taken any finance/business courses in undergrad, is it possible to go into certain financial fields such as venture capital, investment banking, CFA, etc. solely relying on courses taken in business school?

Unless you’re at a top program for economics, it is unlikely that you will be recruited for investment banking, but if you do want to go into a finance-heavy field, you would be doing yourself a favor by taking some finance courses. Economics is a little more respected than a BBA when applying to MBA programs, but economics majors generally have lower starting salaries, so you might as well try for grad school right out of undergrad with economics.

But the thing is, b-schools generally won’t accept you unless you have work experience, right? So I have to go do some work with my B.A. in Economics first, before I can apply for and study towards an M.B.A…so, what jobs specifically can one get as an Economics major?

Regarding the question about going into those finance-heavy fields, I meant, can I learn the appropriate things only from business school to go into those fields? (Since my undergraduate school doesn’t offer anything finance-related.)

Or actually, would it be more favorable to get a degree in something else?

Ultimately I would like to go into finance or accounting or something business-related. My undergrad school doesn’t offer any such courses and transferring out is…well, I’d rather not make the equation that messy…

So I guess, a better question: can I major in something like PoliSci or Engineering, do a couple years work, and apply for grad and learn finance/accounting at b-school while working towards an M.B.A.? (Yes, I realize how very long-winded, inefficient, and foolish that plan sounded. Especially since I get a Bachelor’s for a certain job but end up targeting a completely different job. But the question is, is it possible to do that? And still have a decent shot at the job market, of course; will I be considered too old to start, or be behind others who studied finance right out of undergrad?)

Or should I just **** and give up thinking about getting a finance/accounting-related job, because my undergrad school doesn’t extend that opportunity?

(Also, still, what DO Econ majors do as a career?)

Econ majors do a lot of the same jobs as business majors usually. Sure some of your skills will transfer. I just meant that, while experience is preferred, a lot of people go straight to grad school and that’s when the econ degree has an advantage over a business degree.
