What to do with my summer?

So, basically I was planning on getting a summer job as a lifeguard, however there are only 3 pools in my town. I applied to all 3. 1 of them said that they didn't have openings, the second one I interviewed at, then got denied, and the third still hasn't called me back. Now I'm like freaking out. First of all I'm not going to have anything to do all summer. Secondly, I'm worried that it will look really bad for colleges that I'm not doing anything all summer. I'm considering volunteering, but all the places that are long term volunteer jobs seem like you need to have applied a while ago. Do any of you have any advice on what I should do this summer? Or are there any interesting programs that it's not too late for me to get into.

You could learn begin learning a language. It’s amazing how fast you progress when you have absolutely nothing else to do.

If you’re interested in computers beyond a superficial level, Java or Python might also be avenues to explore.

Likewise, self-studying for future APs never hurts, especially for Calculus, Chemistry, and/or Physics B/C. This helps you get a head start and gain momentum in the beginning weeks of school.

There’s tons of free quality material online for all the subjects I mentioned. You just need to know where to look.

what year are you in?

Ugh. I’m going Junior–>Senior. How much will this hurt me with top colleges like Rice, WashU, Tufts?
On top of being bad for college, I’m just worried that I’ll be bored all summer :(

It’s not too late to apply for summer@Brown. But, if you needed financial aid, it’s too late.

What are you interested in? Perhaps you could volunteer in something related to what you’re interested in. (For example, a hospital if you want to go into the medical field.)

See if anywhere else besides a pool has a job opening. Working is good for you, and it gives you some extra spending money. Other jobs may not be as (generally) easy as life guarding, but still get you paid.

I feel you about the job hunt. The only place that I can work within a 10 minute driving distance has like a 5 month wait for applications. =/

Since it’s your last summer before applying to colleges, I would say if you can’t find anything else to do, get some extra volunteer hours in to pad your app with.
