What to do with outside Scholarships?

I've called the Financial Aid office several times about this issue and have received different answers each time. I won two outside scholarships, each awarding me a check in hand. Since I only recently found out that all outside scholarships must be reported to your school, I called FA to find out how to proceed with this. I was given answers ranging from mailing the checks over to just cashing them in and using the money to pay for school. Can someone give me a concrete answer, or point me in a better direction? Thanks.

I think it depends somewhat on the amounts and if a 1099 will be issued at year end to the receipent. I reported the monies my son received on my income tax return as he was and is a dependent on my taxes and I claimed the educational credit. His Stipend was sent directly to the school - very formal process. The smaller checks those at $500.00 or less with no 1099’s (call the organization that awarded to you) went to pay for books

If you are receiving a non-University scholarship, the foundation that is awarding the scholarship to you can send the scholarship check or letter of intent at the beginning of the fall semester to:

Rutgers University Student Accounting Office
Records Hall, Room 138, CAC
620 George Street
New Brunswick, New Jersey 08901-1175

The scholarship must not be contingent upon your fall semester grades in order to take credit on your term bill. Student Accounting will acknowledge receipt of scholarship check and/or follow up with foundation for any additional information needed. For further information, please call the Student Accounting Help Desk at: +1 (848) 932-2254.

If inclusion of the external award exceeds student’s need or the cost of attendance, the Office of Financial Aid is obligated to make changes to the student’s financial aid award. Separate from the notification & check the students sends to the Student Accounting Office (directives above), the student should also send a copy of the scholarship letter to the Office of Fiancial Aid by fax or mail. Please title the document: 12-13 AY External Scholarship Notification.
