Oh no! I adore my every day dishes (C&B Mist and complimentary pieces from Mahogany) and nearly every time I put away dishes, I eye that cupboard and think to myself, “I’m sure it’s fine” and it has been for over a decade, but wow, how sad for you. You must have wanted to sit down in the midst of the mess and just cry.

That’s the same pattern I have. I still really like it, even though I don’t use it very often.
Our every day dishes are Denby Azure Coast.

Too bad about the breakage. I remember watching my Waterford stemware roll and rotate on the shelf and eventually tip over in slow motion. This was during an earthquake aftershock. Unbelievably unbroken!

That’s lovely! Use it, why not?

When S21 was 2 or 3 he somehow got a hold of my favorite large Lenox vase (I think we had just used all of our china for a holiday meal and I had all of it including bases, candlesticks, etc lined up on the formal dining room table waiting to be returned to china cabinets)…and he stared at me as I cautiously walked toward him hoping he’d carefully and simply hand it to me…

Nope. He grinned and I KNEW what was next.

Yep. He stared right at me and let it slide through his fingers to the ground and promptly started cracking himself up.

He’s a VERY nice 18 year old but I still tease him that he was a terror that day expressing MUCH glee at testing gravity with my Lenox. :joy:

Oh my gosh that had to be awful @deb922 ! And what a mess!

I honestly think one should consider using your fancy china every day. Before kids and before we had a dishwasher we did just that. The stuff we use at our cabin that we share with my cousins is drop dead gorgeous in my opinion. Typical art deco-ish 1920s stuff. I love it. It makes me happy every time we go up there.

I know a fair number of people with my Wedgewood pattern - it always surprises me it was discontinued.

Oh my, that is beautiful and unique @MaineLonghorn

For every day use, my husband and I are still big fans of our Corelle. I have some of my original (white with maroon flowers on edge) and frost white additions. Then past few years I’ve added extras dinner plates in more white/pattern variations from thrift shops.

Extra Corelle dinner plates do not take up much extra room since they stack so compactly. They also works nicely in dishwasher… I just never liked the clunkiness of stoneware for dishwasher… it annoys me when we encounter it in rented condos and beach houses. I don’t mind the look of it, just for our preferences they are too impractical.

Hmmm…there’s a thought. Those with extra dishes can offer them to friends with 2nd homes.

Of course, having clicked on some of the links to china patterns I am being fed China Pattern ads on other sites! A link from family china to modern internet advertising.

I also use Corelle as my everyday dishes. Got a set when I got married and have since gotten a second set. They each have different pieces - one has small bowls, one has pasta plates, etc Both have the same color blue with white so they go together. I have added many white serving pieces which I also use everyday.

My main reason for getting Corelle is that I am such a klutz and they are almost unbreakable. I have managed to break a few over the years (boy do they shatter into a gazillion pieces.)

In recent years I have added for everyday use some melamine plates. Again they are indestructible, very cheap, and I like the crazy patterns and colors. Unlike the Corelle, they can not go in the microwave.

We use corelle as our “breakfast” dishes (which means 90% of our meals). Place setting for 10 stacks in a drawer 8” high. If I had to pick only one set, they would be it.

Same here, ha! I’m seeing lots of china.

Thank you! I think it’s fascinating she picked a pattern I love. I am not a big lover of china - flowers on dishes don’t do a lot for me. But this pattern is so pretty and classy.

This thread has prompted me to decide to start using it more often. If it’s just DH and me, there’s not much handwashing required!

My china goes right in the dishwasher. Just allow it to fully cool before handling if it has any metallic trim.

I can’t speak to gold trim. But my silver trim Royal Doulton which is used regularly, goes in the dishwasher, looks pretty good for 38 years of use! I would rather use it (which means the dishwasher) than keep it in a cupboard for children who won’t want it!!!

OK, I’ll play! My wedding china (service for 12, with an extra 4 plates for buffets (my grandmother’s philosophy  )is Minton Consort. I know conventional wisdom is to not put gold-rimmed china in the dishwasher, but I’ve done it for years with no ill effects.

And this is my mother’s wedding china - Minton Rosewood. Don’t love the pattern but love that she chose it. She only had a few remaining plates and soup bowls and they are currently living in my basement to be used on a mix and match basis if I ever can have holiday dinners again!!

I also have this McKee glass pie plate that belonged to my great-grandmother. I was fortunate to know my great-grandmother, who passed away when I was in college. I display it in my China cabinet, and use it occasionally. I hope that one of my children want it, most likely DS.
