What to do

I made a very bad mistake. I lied about how long i've been doing 2 particular ecs and stretched a leadership position. I feel very badly about this, and because I acted so immaturely and irresponsibly, I have decided not to go to any of the first 5 schools I applied to- including my dream school. Instead, I made a new version of my common app, and applied to three new schools, being completely honest about everything. My question is, if any of the first 5 schools I applied to finds out that I lied, will they tell the other colleges I am applying to about my deception, including the 3 new schools I was completely honest with? I'm not looking for a morality discussion, I've decided to do what is right, but I want to know if a college would basically blacklist my name. Thank You

Kudos on this post, seriously. I know a lot of people who have lied about *much *worse and feel nothing but pride at having ‘gotten away with it’. Don’t stress; you really have nothing to worry about.

Just withdraw the applications and you should be fine.

I don’t want to withdraw my applications. My mom wants to at least see the rejection letter seeing as she paid for the application. does anyone know definitively if colleges will talk to one another about this?

? anyone? please…

if you don’t want to lie, a simpler thing to do would be to call the admissions office and say that you made a mistake on your application that you need to correct. that way you can be honest with these schools and still consider going to them without feeling bad.

if that’s not an option (i’m not totally sure how these things work), then withdrawing your apps is the safest way to go; however, unless you lied really blatantly, there’s a very small chance that they’d find out, and their finding out would mainly be a problem only if you decide to go to the school and they find out later that you lied. from how you describe what you’ve done, it sounds pretty minor and it’s great that you’re taking responsibility for it. relax; it’s really all going to be ok :)

You do risk getting caught if you don’t withdraw the applications. I’d explain this to your mom, lying is serious.

I don’t think they would blacklist you.

But yes, I would definitely notify the schools if you have not gotten your decisions back yet. It puts you in a much better place all around.

They won’t compare apps or blacklist you. And I don’t think you have to withdraw your apps either. I think you should send a letter to each of the 5 schools with the corrections. This was a mistake. Tell them you made a mistake that you would like to correct the record. Let them decide what the consequences should be. You don’t have to punish yourself more than they would.
