What to do

Because of scheduling reasons, I am not able to take the "AP" calculus BC course, instead I must take a course which does the SAME EXACT THING, EVERY DAY, and I lose the name and the weight. The reason they get that and we do not is because we are not required to take an AP test while they are (and I plan on doing it anyway)...

How should I make this known... My biggest concern is the GPA, and how it will hinder me from getting above a 4.0...

This would be a stupid argument if the class was easier than the AP BC class, alas, it is not.

Wait…who’s ‘they’?

The good idea, I think, is to take the AP test for that. ORR, maybe you could take AP Calc BC online and have it count in credits and as part of your actual courseload.

This is so wierd though. A class that’s the exact same as BC but called differently? If it’s the same content, it should be on the same level, which should be no problem for your GPA.

They is the school administration. I want to take it in school because the teacher is REALLY good (I mean she is nice, she teaches REALLY well, explains herself thoroughly and what not)…

I will take the test. Regardless, if I get an A, instead of getting 4.333 I get a 4.000… Even though my current school is really rigorous and our “regular” classes are like honors courses we barely weight and only do it for AP and IB, getting the weight really pushes the people who get it about the rest.

Plus this would most easily (if I got the grade, and probably even if I didn’t… but I would have more room for error) make me among the top set of students for rank and all.

A good friend of mine in high school wanted to take an advanced electronics course, but the schedule conflicted with the only offered calc class. He took the electronics course and studied the calc independently. He had a great SAT math score (terrible verbal SAT), but the calc self study was enough of a hook to get him into Caltech.

I would consider doing that but I have two major reasons which prevent me:
-I never did precalc, I just completed Alg II last year and was able to get a good grade on the precalc exit exam
-The teacher is GREAT and worth having

He only had Alg II as background. The only reason the calc self study was an effective hook was because it was truly a remarkable accomplishment. He was a pretty bright guy. I think he went on to grad school at Caltech, and worked on optics for satellites.

I would say take the class that is not AP. Good teachers are really hard to find, and it would look very good if you had a solid AP Calc BC score without even taking the class. Yes, your GPA will suffer a bit, but I think that colleges would understand that, at least a bit.

Good luck
