What to do?

Hi, I'm currently a Soph in High School. I really want to get into a good college but don't know exactly what I should focus my time on.

Im am in the marching band. TBH I don't really enjoy it but I want to be drum major my senior year which I'm hoping will show leadership and time commitment. My band teacher like me.

I am in the Jazz A band since Freshman year. I am the drummer 2 and I'd say I'm pretty damn decent for my age.

I live in California and hope to get into Berkeley Jazz school for combos and the studio band b4 I graduate High School.

As you can see, I love Jazz.

My grades:

Freshman year I got All A's and 2 B's. In French 2 and Honors Geometry.

My French teacher is COMPLETELY Bias with her grading. She already hates my and This is my last year in french because of her (French 3).

TBH I don't think I will get an A in French this year.

I generally tend to do well in math. It is just the stupid mistakes that screw me up on test. This year, I am in Honors Algebra 2. This is the HARDEST math class in my school. It is even harder than Calc BC. Our Teachers is really cool and a great teacher but dishes out Impossible test.

Being realistic, I plan on getting a B in Math because I don't know how to really "study" for math.

I'm 1 year ahead in science. I am taking Physics and Chem. Most only take chem this year. I think I will get A's in these.

Im in normal English. It is a joke.

Predicted outcome:

French 3: B
Jazz A: A
Chem: A
H Algebra 2: B
English: A
Physics: A

Clubs:

Im am In:

Multi Cultural Club. I don't know if I will drop this or not. If I don't drop it I will be able to get a high ranking by senior year but not president fosho.

Teens Reaching Out. I am currently the youngest officer. I am friends with the president and he set me up so I will be president of this club my senior year. :)

DECA: I am kinda in DECA. Next year I will take the class that will permit me to compete nationally and I hope to get a good officer position. Most likely not president.

French Club: I am considering doing French Club. If I do, I will have to drop MCC but there is a good chance I will be an officer. But Because I do not plan on taking French 4 or French 5, I will drop out of French club nxt year.

Other:

I play recreational sports. Nothing to brag about.

I do community service sometimes. My goal is to get 300 hours b4 I apply to colleges.

I have a few great ideas for iphone apps that involve music. I plan on making one next year after I take AP Compsci. My dad is a computer scientist so he will help me.

My dad also says I should do some research. One of his friend's son got into MIT for some research project. Anyone know what kind of research is good? I have no clue.

I should note that I have a VERY strong interest in Econ and business. I love watching the stock market and I personally own $2500 worth of Apple stock. I have made $500 since I bought them. :D

Any suggestions, I will take into consideration about adding to my life.

Future classes:

I am taking/took

French 1, 2, 3. No more french after 3.

H Alg 1, H Geo, H Alg 2. Plan on taking H precalc, and AP Calc BC ----- I think I will end up getting B's in all these and future math classes.

Frosh Engl, Soph Engl, plan on normal Junior engl, and some regular senior engl. I am a pretty good writer, I just feel the time commitment honors and AP english takes it not worth it.

I plan on taking Jazz/marching Band all 4 years.

I took Ap World History at a community college during the summer of Frosh - Soph year. Everyone else in my class is taking world history and I already finished it and got an A. It was DAMN HARD.

I plan on taking the following AP's...

Junior Year: AP Comp sci, (Programming) AP US History, AP phycology.

Senior Year: AP Econ, AP Gov, AP Bio, AP Calc BC.

Summer plans:

I personally feel that cramming classes during summer is not as benificial as it seems. I did it last year, but there is no need for me to do it this year.

This year, I plan on spending my summer in India. (I am Indian).

I will work with project RISHI. This is a UC Berk and LA Sponsored organization where people volunteer to go to poor villages in India and improve living conditions.

My Junior-Senior summer, I want to take come business/econ class. I heard people apply to top colleges during summer and take a supplement class for your own personal benefit. This Highly interest me.

So this is pretty much my life. I took half an hour to write this. I really want some advice to guide me correctly.

I want to get into:

UCLA (My bro goes here)
UC Berkley
Some good private schools like Rice ect.

I want to strive for:
Ivy League. (MIT Harvard Cornell Princeton ect.)

Please respond and help!

Thanks

Someone help please!

bump bump bump

Spelling Berkeley correctly would be a good start.

W.e, I was typing fast.

I still need advice someone!

You need to have a good attitude if you want to do well. Saying you will probably have B’s in your math classes and French won’t cut it. If you will have all B’s in math, might as well not consider MIT at all.

If you think taking AP English is not worth it, once again might as well not consider Ivy schools. I know two California English teachers who teach both AP and regular english. In regular courses they are required to go at the pace of the “slowest” student, which usually doesn’t speak English. In AP they set their own pace. If you’re not going to push yourself, in college nobody will.

I would suggest to start studying on your SATs and ACTs. It really does help to begin getting ready early. If you have the finances (and if you don’t, get the fee waivers), take both of the tests at the end of this year. Pick which one you like better and start studying.

Your current ECs are lacking. Being in four student-run clubs isn’t anything significant. It seems like you are doing them just to get into college, while you should be doing what you are interested in or passionate about.

Aim for straight As and high SAT or ACT scores. Don’t forget about the subject tests. These will be most important. For ECs, do what you like, not what will get you in college. It seems like getting into a good college is a goal for you, while it should be a tool for you. A person can be succesful without going to a good college, just gotta have the character.

Thanks for the feedback. I completely get what you are saying because another senior last year said the same thing to me.

Here are my concerns:

When I said I will most likely get a B in math and French, I was trying to be realistic. French is almost impossible, due to the fact that my french teacher is 99% Bias, and she doesn’t like me.

As far as math goes, I just don’t understand how one can study for math. The only tips I get were, pay attention in class, take good notes, and do lots of problems. But these study tools can only go so far, then our tests take it even further and i don’t know how to prepare for that.

By the Ap english thing, I meant the amount of time required to put into Ap English and only get a B, is equivalent to getting an A in 1-2 other Aps!

I have started studying for the SAT’s last week. I took the psat for the first time last week to get a feel for how it will work. I’m working only on vocab now since I did not know what many of the words meant. The math portion is very easy and the only possible way i would miss a math problem is if I make a stupid mistake or run out of time. I will start practicing the writing/grammar part in a few months.

I know my Ec’s kinda suck right now. I don’t know what some good EC’s are that colleges like. I like band and I have a really good shot at being drum major my senior year but I don’t know if colleges care about that. I also plan to go to some private school over the summer and take a supplemental class on business management since I really like that kind of stuff.

The reason I care so much about going to a good college is because that is my sole motivation in High school. If I didn’t care what college I would go to, I’d just be sitting on my ass all day watching TV. I wouldn’t even bother to pursue my interest because everything requires work. I look at getting into a good college as a challenge, goal, but most importantly, my motivation.

bump…

I don’t think you’ll be able to get into any Ivy or MIT. The only advice I can really give you right now is to get involved, do what you love, strive for straight A’s, and start studying for the ACT/SAT. If you do these things, you will get into one of the colleges you want to go to.

Why do you say I won’t get into an Ivy? Does a few B’s in 3 years of highschool matter that much?

“This year, I am in Honors Algebra 2. This is the HARDEST math class in my school. It is even harder than Calc BC.”

First of all, this just makes you come off as ignorant. Under no conditions would Algebra 2 be even close in difficulty to Calc BC, unless the teacher is extremely harsh. That being said, you claim to have great teachers. With this attitude of making excuses for every B (even ones that clearly have no merit), I don’t think you will be a good fit for any Ivy League school. Especially not MIT.

You come off as extremely immature. Do you read much?

Widening your perspective of the world, so that you’re not so stereotypically generation me, might help you. If you change your perspective then you might be able to see what you’re doing wrong, change your habits, and get into a good college.

Still definitely not Ivy or MIT, but they’re not the only good colleges in the US you know…

More than 1 B a year generally doesn’t cut it for the better Ivies and no way for MIT (especially in math) unless you have something else that is stellar. ECs are average or subpar for Ivy applicants. If you can do something with the investments or start a mini-business that would help. For example, last year I played the stock market and made 20k on a 10 k investment. And don’t make excuses for Bs. Work hard to make them As because if others are getting As, you can get As.

Btw, I forgot to add that My goal is 200-300 community service hours before I apply to college.

I didn’t know there was a second page. I’ll start replying from the first comment:

@Waterbottle: I’m am not lying. To put this short, my Honors A 2 teacher said HIMSELF, that this is going to be the hardest math class you will ever take in high school and college (Depending on the college you go to.) Other students I asked who have completed Calc BC or are currently in it even said that Honors Algebra 2 was “A LOT” harder. Those who got B in H A2 got an A in Calc BC. I know its hard to believe, but its true.

@2015 applicant: I am working on improving my ECs. I am thinking about doing research on a topic that interest me soon. I am also going to India with the organization Project RISHI and helping villages out. I also invest in the stock market. I had $1k and I spent it on aapl which has went up $60 per stock since. I made about $600 not including tax so far. My only problem is I don’t know how to get more money. Where did you get the $10k from? If I were to get a job it would take me a year to get only $2000!
