What to double major in with Elementary Education?

I plan to major in Elementary Education, but many schools require elementary ed majors to double major in another subject. What would look good on a resume for another major? (Other then psychology because that is an obvious one)

Wow, I’m surprised that schools you are looking into require a double major. My daughter is going to study elementary education and at most of the schools she is applying to, there is barely room in her schedule for even any electives!

They do require a concentration, however, but even these are limited by what is offered by the school. Typical examples of concentrations are Biology, Chemistry, English, Geology, Math, French and Spanish.

I would think you would be pretty safe with English as a second major. After all, elementary education teachers do a lot of reading with their students. If my daughter had a choice, she would pick Sociology as her concentration, but it’s not offered at her schools. That might be another idea for you.

For a career booster, rather than a double major, look at courses that are needed to make the next step in administration, say. Or for some special ed type courses so that there is more flexibility.

i don’t think you understand, cpto… i’m not LOOKING to double major… but most schools around where i live require it of education majors.

Hi everyone,

In Massachusetts, at least, all elementary education programs require that students complete a second major in a liberal arts or sciences field. The concept is that teachers should have mastery of a subject area in addition to strong preparation in educational methods.

Reese24, I encourage you to explore your options and choose a major that really interests you. The short term boost of a certain major on a resume is quite minimal, while the experience of being truly engaged in your college studies is invaluable.
