I live in California and I have never been to Mexico. However, my friend, who lives in TJ, asked me if I want to spend a few days with him down there. Supposedly his house has 5 floors?? (with basement and observatory)

I haven't told my mom yet, but she told me today about the drug gangs down there and the violence. She said it's dangerous for a girl..But if I go with this guy should I be fine? What is TJ like?

Mexico is probably dangerous for a white girl. I don’t know about Tijuana, but when I went to Puerto Vallarta, a man working for the resort tried to rape my sister (serious).

I’ve heard that places like Mexico City are dangerous for any white tourist… coming from a friend that’s from Mexico.

Well my sister was 14 at the time. She was just outside our hotel room that had our entire family in it when this happened. Make sure that you don’t go anywhere alone.

Mexico isn’t that bad.
Depends on where you go.

Tiajuana is really sketchy because it’s very impoverished. Cabo can be too, just because there is a lot of partying and drinking by affluent foreigners. Maybe locals feel that women are easier targets there. Look into La Paz, which is nearby but much more quiet and safe. Avoid Mexico City, it’s the largest city in North America I’m pretty sure…and definitely not the safest by any means.

Puerto Vallarta is really sleepy and relaxed. I love it there. It’s my favorite Mexican city. I feel very comfortable there.

The thing is that you can’t be ANYWHERE alone without being at risk. Use common sense, stay with friends at all times and use your best judgement about what is comfortable for you and be confident about it. If you are hesitant and nervous, it shows, and you are even more of a target.

Mexico is a great place but just make sure you play it safe.

You can’t even bring a single round of ammunition into Mexico - they take weapons violations very seriously, and this will land you in some big legal trouble.
Even Mexican citizens cannot own common military calibers like 9mm or .223

Don’t expect too much…well actually it depends where you go. If you just go to Tijuana you’ll find a lot of street vendors/performers/beggers along with trash and crap everywhere. If you go somewhere nicer, you’ll bound to find some good restaurants or tourist spots.
