Starting HS this week as a Freshman. What should I expect? I'm really scared, because I'm shy and my school is really big...And I hated Middle School. Any Advice for someone like me? Please feel free to share your thoughts and favorite memories in High School

Keep an open mind.

You’re going to be nervous, and you’re probably going to feel lost. But those feelings are natural and normal. If you can walk into school and keep an open mind about your classes, teachers, and fellow students, everything with be a lot easier. I hated middle school as well.

Try to join a club or two if any pique your interest.

Get enough sleep!

Give yourself plenty of time in the morning to get ready so you’re not feeling so stressed on the first day.

Find at least one person you know who has your lunch and plan to meet up with them if it’s possible.

Bring a snack. You might get hungry between leaving for school and lunch, and after lunch to going home.

See if you can acquire a school map and make a route of your classes if you’re afraid of getting lost.

And most importantly, relax. Maybe it won’t help, but there are plenty of other freshmen feeling scared and shy like you. Just try to keep that in mind.

High school is what you make of it. Hating it is a choice. If you can find something positive in the experience, you’ll have a nice time. It relates to what I said about an open mind.

Don’t be afraid of looking life a freshman. I know a lot of people who ended up getting lost for 10-20 minutes after class started because they were too afraid to just ask for help from a teacher or nice looking upperclassmen (I’d recommend sticking to females that look into kind of nerdy because we’re usually more helpful.)

Also, use these first few weeks or even months to start exploring everything your school has to offer. Sign up for as many clubs as possible and then weed out which ones you’ll do after checking them out at the first meeting because you never really know what they’re like until you try them.

Don’t get caught up with having only one group of friends. You will at some point in high school have a fight with them (even if only for a few days) and you’re going to want some other friends to talk with or hang out with. Clubs are a really great way to make new friends especially in other grades as well.

Finally, just remember, pretty much everyone is a freshman at some point and everyone has their first day at high school. It’s scaring, it’s exciting, and it’s what you make of it, so go in ready for a new experience!

I’m starting high school this week too and I am nervous! I know how you feel seattlebulldog, just be calm, have an open mind and avoid seniors at all costs. You seem like a really nice person and I don’t know how you can’t make friends. BTW I hated my middle school too…

I’m going into my junior year, so at this point I feel like I have some worthy stuff to share :)

I go to an all girls catholic high school, to put my experience into perspective. I don’t know how your orientations work, but basically after this big lecture we all broke off into our individual homerooms. So I made friends with the people next to me in my homeroom (who also happened to be the people next to my locker).

As someone said, everyone has that first day experience and all the freshman around you will be feeling the way you do. I think that’s important to remember because there might be someone acting like they aren’t, but they are.

My favorite moment so far? Ermm, our walk-a-thons are pretty fun. And I really loved English class this passed year, nerdy, I know. Mr. P was really fun and we all just got along really well with each other. In the spring we read A Midsummer Night’s Dream and he made us ACT the play out.

High school is often described as the best four years of your life. I think that that’s in no way true, but that said, it is fun if you want it to be. There are clubs and events and shows to go to. But if you choose to let it suck and not make the most of your time there, it’ll suck.

So have fun, work hard, and just enjoy it. You don’t need my luck
Cheers
