What to get recommenders

I don't want to be trite and get them gift cards or chocolate or thank you cards. But also nothing requiring creative input from me (I'm no baker or origami professional).

Any ideas?
I was thinking about rarely read but poignant novels but I'm not an avid reader myself.

Giving a gift in return for a recommendation seems a little unsavory to me.

Get a box of notecards at the college’s online store; something with the school seal on the front and blank on the inside. Then write a heartfelt thank-you.

It’s quite the norm to give token thank you gifts in appreciation after the fact. I suggest that you order nice logo’d beer steins from the bookstore at the college you’ll be attending. Fill each with a package of gourmet jelly beans. Attach notes thanking them for helping to make your attendance at XYZ College possible. They’ll have something to eat and something to remember you by. (D did this, but filled the steins with homemade fudge instead.) I would avoid books–too much personal taste involved.

I think the last time I can see one of them is tomorrow. I don’t have time to order something from the college’s store! I should just hop on a train to buy something in person! But seriously, what about a blank diary-style book?
