What to get with a computer shopping spree?

Hi guys,

What would be the best setup that you would get for college if money was not an issue?

Im was thinking maybe either a HP touchsmart or desktop-replacement laptop like an Alienware + a macbook air (for carrying around, taking notes, and surfing web)

Any better suggestions?

Alienware M17
Alienware Area-51 m15x
Lenovo ThinkPad W700
HP HDX18t

1 TB hard disk
8 GB main memory

Docking Station
External Monitor or two
External HD for backups

It really depends on what you’re looking for: for me though, after I’ve moved to OS X I wouldn’t go back if I could avoid it. For me then an iMac and an Air would be the ideal combination.

I want the Sony Vaio Z or SR. Taking notes seems hard though because there’s no touch screen like the HP Touchsmart.

^ oh haha i meant the HP touchsmart desktop all in one for like in the dorm room and the air to take around for notes. but I was looking at the vaio series, and i should look into the P series, it looks pretty nice.

and although i really like the number 2 post, i probably should keep it at 2 computers and not like 15000 dollars haha.

the only problem for me for going completely mac, is that there are still problems with compatability and files and such (i.e. docx vs the mac word file)

so… alienware and macbook air… or… macbook and vaio P series… so many possibilities.

If laptops are only for taking notes, then you could go with a high-end PC and a netbook or cheap laptop.

well i have a macbook that i just got for college and it really isnt even comparable to my old dell laptop… the macbook is on such a higher level it makes my old dell look extremely outdated. everyone i know that is currently getting laptops for college is getting macbooks because thats what everyone is recommending, i wanted the air but i couldnt afford. but if money isnt an issue i would go the macbook air. also, mac may have a different system and what not but the issues with it being compatible with windows programs are long gone… you can save all of you documents (ex: email attachments, word documents, keynote presentations [which you can save to open as a powerpoint file]… etc.) i think you see my point, you can always make your programs windows friendly now so theres no more issues with that, personally i LOVE mine and would neverrrrrrrr go back to another type after using a mac. hope this helped! =]

oh and i would def. recommend the iMac for in the dorm =]
my rec: iMac and macbook air

Loaded Mac Pro ($20000) + Macbook Pro ($4000)

I would avoid an alienware.

I’m not a big fan of the flashy design. I’d go for something more subtle like a sager NP5797

Mac Pro, $25K configuration + MacBook Pro 15 inch model.

I don’t like the design of the MacBook Air. It has some thermal issues and I’d prefer more compute power when mobile.

I have a 17 inch MacBook Pro right now and use it for 95% of my computing.
