What to include in a college application packet

Hi-
D in the process of sending her college applications now. She has a couple of special things that could be sent along with her application. One is a recorded CD of 2 classical vocal pieces and 2 piano pieces. The other is the program from a special Autism Fundraiser that she organized and performed in. On the one hand we would like to showcase things that are unique but on the other hand we don't want to be over-the-top to the very over-worked admissions folks.

Her intended major is communications with either a dual BA in music or music minor.

thanks

When a friend’s D was applying last year to music programs she had to submit a recording, then she also had to audition on site at several places. What are the requirements at the schools she is applying to?

As for the fundraiser program, I would suggest she talk about it in one of the essay topics, or elaborate in her “activities resume” rather than sending something which perhaps doesn’t give as good a picture of what it meant to her.

I think this may vary by school. I know that, at the Stanford Info sessions several years ago, the Admissions Officer stated in no uncertain terms that applicants should NOT include CDs/portfolios etc. unless they were World Class level, with the outside recognition to know that. I think it would hurt at such a place. But I do not necessarily think that is the case at all schools.

I would check each school’s admissions website very carefully on this.
