What to major in at UMICH?

I’ve been changing my mind a lot about what I want to major in and I was wondering if I could hear the opinions of other people. Ever since high school, I’ve wanted to study Neuroscience so I walked into UMICH thinking that I was going to declare myself a Neuroscience major. I am now a sophomore (still premed) and I’m thinking about switching to Biomolecular Science, only because I am worried about not having a good career if Med School doesn’t work out right away or at all. I still love Neuroscience but I figured that I would still be able to pursue Neurology if I go to med school so majoring in Neuroscience might not be the best idea for me. I dont know if i want to study it hardcore and end up hating it because of the stress of getting into med school and then be stuck with the major. Right now I want to be able to maintain a good GPA because after looking at the Neuroscience degree requirements, I see a lot of random classes that I would not be interested in taking at all and are extremely difficult (STATS, a bunch of psych classes- i dont enjoy psych).

Is Biomolecular science a good science degree to have in case med school doesn’t work out? I dont want to keep thinking about not getting in, but i just want to be realistic and proactive. I also like the fact that I wouldn’t have to take Stats because I am really not looking forward to that class at all. I’m fine with the other classes such as Genetics, Biochem, etc since I would need those for the MCAT anyway.

I also really wanted to major in Physiology but unfortunately umich doesn’t have that degree:( Are there any other science degrees at umich that would help me out in this way?

Thanks!!

I would immediately speak with academic advising and email some of the professors in your interest area to set up a time to speak with them. If you don’t know of any talk with the departmental secretary who will know exactly who to speak with.

For any of the non med school careers you will need a graduate degree for the really interesting jobs in the field.
