What to major in before med school? (think engineering)

I was wondering what I should major in when applying for college this fall? I ultimately want to go to med school but I don't think majoring in biology is a good idea because so many people do that , = high competition. I am interested in engineering, however, and am wondering if I can major in engineering while also taking premed courses?

Should I major in engineering vs. biology?
What type of engineering? (I was thinking chemical)
Should I double major in engineering and biology? (sounds like a ton of work though)

I know its a lot of questions, but any help is appreciated.

Is thought that majoring in both engineering and biology will hurt your GPA. Med school emphasizes GPA a lot.

Chemical makes sense because organic chem will be a required course for both the degree and med school. I would shy away from a double major. ChemE can be the toughest major on campus.

Take Biology, if your actual goal is med school then your GPA is the main concern. Engineering will not help that, especially when you are trying to fit in pre-med reqs on top of your engineering coursework. Biology is popular because: 1)It already contains a lot of the pre-reqs and transitions smoothly 2)It can give you a good base for the advanced classes you will be taking in the future.

Whatever your major, you’ll need great grades, a good MCAT score, great recommendations, and some substantial volunteer work/physician shadowing/leadership positions/research experience to be competitive. For many, it would be hard to achieve these goals while pursuing an engineering degree because the curriculum tends to be very structured and challenging. However, it can be done. In the event that you don’t get into med school, you will likely be able to find a good job in engineering. You should definitely think about what you would do with your biology degree if you were unsuccessful getting into med school since most applicants don’t get in. For example, one of the lower-tiered med schools in my state had over 4000 applicants for 100 spots.

ChemE is not a bad premed major but you need to realistically assess your chances of getting a high GPA in a tough program.
