What to Major in When I Don't Know What I Want to do

I’m going to college next year and for my whole life, I’ve wanted to be a doctor. And I still do to this day. However I have also found interest in possibly doing Real Estate or Fashion Design. I know these three careers are vastly different from each other. Which one would I have the best chance in being the best in (i.e. being a famous real estate agent or a well-known designer or doctor)? Also, what is a good major that could lead me into any of these careers? I am nervous that if I major in a science field, that I might not use it after college. Thanks for the feedback!

@Madi12 Regarding which one you would have the best chance in being the best in, it all depends on your skills, knowledge, etc., that’s something that you are going to have to determine rather than people you don’t know, that don’t know you, on the internet. But I am rather an expert in having a lot of vastly different interests, so I will share what little dubious advice I have for you:

Is there a way to do one thing on the side (either as a hobby or as a side hustle) while you pursue another as a main source of income/main job? Being a doctor is pretty time consuming, but you could probably dabble in both real estate and fashion design if you put in the time and the effort.

Also, I’m not quite sure because I’ve never looked to go into pre-med before, but unless you’re going the nursing route or a specific pre-med degree through the school, I think I read somewhere on here that you don’t necessarily have to major in a science field to be pre-med. If you wanted to keep your options open, you could possibly have a double major with a science field (probably really time consuming and stressful, though) or minor if possible. So, for instance, you could double major Fashion Design and Biology, or major in Design and minor in Bio, or vice versa.

Plus, I don’t know yet because it probably depends on what college you go to (public/private, top tier/lower, etc), but you could possibly do internships and shadows outside of your major (so you might major in Bio but try to get an internship at a fashion magazine or a design studio, or shadow a real estate agent, etc) to get connections into other fields even if you don’t major in it. Take this with a grain of salt, I’m kind of talking without experience here as a high school senior myself.

Whatever happens, good luck!

Wow, thank you so much for your advice! You made some very valid points and gave me some good ideas. When I know where I am going for school, it will definitely help deciding a major.

When it comes to undergraduate, real estate is often a minor, and fashion design is a concentration within fine arts.
So out of the three things you picked, doctor requires significantly longer, which means costlier education. Do you like it enough to do that?
Which school are you going to, if you don’t mind my asking?

You can get into med school with ANY major, but you have to make sure that you take all of the required STEM courses. Based off of the info you gave, I would not recommend a science major. Medical school is notorious for being VERY difficult to get into, so you need to come up with a plan in case you don’t get accepted.

Ultimately, I would suggest spending your first two years as “undeclared” and see what courses you like. Make sure you speak with an academic adviser, since they can provide more help than anyone on the internet can.
