Hi, I would one day like to accomplish my dream of becoming an athletic director for a college. What do athletic directors usually major in and how do they become one?

I am not an expert in this area but I have been an avid college sport fan for a long long time and based upon my observations it seems to me that most athletic directors were and are former college athletes in a major college sport …football, basketball and to a lesser extent hockey…the career path of ADs especially large Division 1 programs I believe is predominantly through the coaching ranks to AD. I believe this is as an important consideration as any specific major. Having said that, there has been a growing number of sports management programs at the bachelors and masters level which have courses related to managing college sports programs. So in my humble opinion a detailed knowledge and enthusiasm for sports and good management knowledge would be skill sets valuable to perusing a career culminating in Athletic Director position. Hope this helps !

What I would do if I were you, rconn1, is to go to the athletic site of colleges and read the biographies of the ADs and Assistant ADs.
