So, I am a pre-med student who plans to pursue a career in medicine. Specifically as a Doctor. Being in Undergrad, I feel as though there a many interests and it becomes hard to decide what ti major in. I love science, (specifically Biology), nutrition, exercise, graphic design, and anything amongst those lines. When I transfer to a University I am planning on double majoring. One of majors is going to be Business Management. Finding that other degree is whats difficult because of the many interests that I have. What do you all suggest?! Since being at a community college, I also feel that I should for a beneficial outcome, get a certificate or degree of some sort in a medical field to get started on experience and prepare me for medical school.
Why don’t you just major in Business Management and take electives in all of the other subjects you’re interested in? You don’t need a second major for that.
For me a second major is something I know I will use. For the interests I have, I have decided to just leave them and maybe do them as electives like you said. I actually decided to maybe pursue dietetics because it’s something I use as an athlete and it’s something I see myself using to also help other people.
Biology then
Biology is under science category right?
If you want to go to med school, pharmacy grad school, physical therapy grad school, or any other grad school related to health care, then don’t double major in graphic design. Take some graphic design classes as electives to fill a general ed requirement or just for fun. I have friends who have BA’s in graphic design and have many years of experience and found themselves out of work because the job market dried up, so they ended up switching careers. Earning a comfortable living in graphic design can be pretty challenging.
Do some research about what classes medical schools require you to have taken in order to apply for med school and then for your 2nd major, pick the major that is the best match to that…most of the time, it’s something like biology, biochemistry, etc. Sometimes pre-med students will major in nutrition.
I second the advice not to double major, but just to major in business management and then take the classes that interest you. As a pre-med student you will already be very busy taking pre-med prerequisites, shadowing/volunteering, doing research, and maybe participating in other activities. You don’t need the stress of trying to keep up a second major.
juillet has a good point. What about just minoring in Business Management?
Thank you everyone for the feedback! So, I have a lot to think about in terms of degrees, but I truly feel that business management and biology are it for me. Now I have to determine about double majoring or just doing one as a minor and one as a major. I still have time (at least what remains) to think about it since I am still at community and am taking courses in both. Definitely will be making this decision soon since I am almost finished here and ready to transfer to work towards my Bachelor Degree.
Majoring in areas that interest you is a good idea for any premed as if you like course material that tends to translate into better grades which is something med schools will look at very carefully. Although many med students have double majored, med schools won’t cut you slack if your grades suffer because of the demands of a double major, so beware. Also consider med schools will expect to see ECs (eg patient related) that somehow reflect you know what you’re getting into. So along with demands of a double major, you’ll have to find time for ECs, have a social life, etc. Good luck.
