I am a freshman girl and I was talking to a suitemate about what to pack when we realized we really don't know. I've read most of the typical 'what to pack' threads already, but what I need to know is a wee bit different.

Do we need binders and folders and all those highschool stationary for typical college courses?

Are there specific requirements for notes/work/quizzes/whatever in pen or pencil?

Do we need notebooks for every class? I would like a gist of what is needed for a typical class like Chem6a, or Math10A.

(girl's question)Are dresses needed? I mean, would just sundresses work or should we keep a formal dress? And to which point of 'formal'?

Do we need a set of semi-formals? (like the ones you HAVE to wear during senior conference or whatever, with collars and ties and stuff)

And um, yea... tips are appreciated as well.

Bring some pencils, bring some pens. Buy a couple 20 cent folders from Target if you want. You won’t need them for chem or math, but maybe for your writing class. Last year I went through exactly one pencil, one pen, and one highlighter. Maybe that means I need to study more, ha ha.

So we don’t need like a whole binder with dividers like we did in high school right? And do we need any lined paper? Or will notebooks do just fine?

Could you please elaborate on what’s useful/cool/not common that’s going to be shared a lot; would help to know before hand and not finding out for myself lol

Bring pencils and pens, it depends how much you write. I study by writing things down and making charts, etc. so lots are necessary for me. Its a personal preference. I would bring some notebooks, and as others said, a notebook per class is usually good. Maybe some loose paper for working out problems, since you are in math and science classes. I feel like its a lot less than what you need for high school. You’ll figure out how you best organize things. Pen for things that are worth points (in case you’ll want a regrade), but pencil for scantrons.

For the girl questions, I love wearing dresses so I always bring some. They are definitely popular when the weather is good. One dress for a dance and/or clubbing may be fun if you are into that, and I would also recommend a professional looking outfit for job interviews and those sorts of things. Also, if you are planning on joining a sorority, be prepared to bring some nice outfits for certain occasions.

@MySimpComplex I’m really girly and I love dressing up, so I’m bringing lots of dresses/skirts there is gonna be an all-campus dance during welcome week though, maybe you should bring a dress for that! as for formals, I heard those are always useful to have on hand (maybe for interviews, presentations?) so just bring one set for assurance.

Thanks for all these superb replies! I’m going to pack at least a sundress now… -w-

I’m going to be so relieved with the lack of binders and heavy folders this year. tear jerks

I believe some of the guys that I know actually spent and use more on hair products than girls. I’m sure it’s totally fine if you want to look awesome for school, I mean, who doesn’t?

^exactly. besides, ur suitemates are gonna be all guys. sure, maybe they’ll look at you funny but as long as u look gewd in the end. i mean cmon, who are u trying to impress? the suitemates? or the girls?

Another question, what about eating/cooking utilities for a freshman? I know how to cook and everything but I don’t think it’s needed for the first year with all the cash credits we have.

But should we keep a set of bowls and plates and whatever just in case?

(Chinese question) Should I bring a set of chopsticks along? I can use western and eastern utilities just fine but would it be I dunno, somehow better with chopsticks?
