So, what exactly should you say in a "Why do you want to attend _____ school, and what do you hope to achieve with your education here blah blah blah" type of essay?

Tell the truth! What is it about ____ school that made you want to apply there? Is there a specific department that attracts you? Did you sit in on a wonderful class that made an impression on you? What made _____ school stand out from the other schools you visited? What's the first thing you think of when you think of this school? If you can't answer at least one of these questions, maybe you should ask yourself if you really should be applying to this school.

this kind of essay is great for conveying excitement and passion for a school that can really help you come decision time. be sure to spend time on it, the post above me has great advice. don't think about what you should say, jsut what you want to say that attracts you to the school.

You should tell only what you believe, not what you believe they want you to say. If you do this and are still not accepted then the school just wasn't right for you, and you will still undoubtedly have many other great choices.

if you don't know why you want to go to a specific school, or your reasons are broad, like "I like the majors offered," "my boyfriend's going there" or "it is a first tier school," try to investigate exactly what features of the college attract you; go onto the college's website, look through the student life, programs of study areas, etc. and try to brainstorm reasons why this college intrigues you. Email around, or talk to a friend that you know who goes to that university you would like to attend. Some possible reasons to like a school include:

-fascinating professors (i.e. Boston University: Elie Weisel, Nobel Laureate)
-Terrific/specific programs (i.e. University of Pennsylvania: Huntsman program: dual major in International Studies and Wharton business/economics)
-Great location/atmosphere (if you like big cities and all the opportunities they may offer or If you love the rural location of a college because of the access to wilderness and fresh air, say so! except don't be so cliche)

Like the posts before this one, tell the truth! no one wants to hear fluff... and if you really can't find anything you like specifically in the college, it is perhaps a waste of time to apply

i was told never to use atmosphere locatioN? even some apps tell you specifically to exclude such things.

If you fell in love with a place, then mention it.

But telling Columbia that you want to go there because it's in NYC isn't going to win you any votes.
