What to see on visit to get a good feel for the campus

We will be visiting Emory for the second time and I am wondering what current students/parents might recommend we do to get a good feel for the school. Where would be the best place to have lunch? What dorms should we visit? Where do students hang-out?
Are there some incredible classes that you can recommend attending? Are there special places that we should visit that really show Emory in all of its glory? Thanks in advance!

If you’re able to go on a Tuesday, attend the sustainable food fair on the cox hall bridge around mid-day. If you’re able to go on a Wednesday, check with admission (or someone on here) when the next Wonderful Wednesday is going to be. Likewise, if you can plan to visit during Dooley’s Week in the Spring, that would be a great time.

Some things you can do any day of the year:

-Visit the Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Books Library on the 10th floor of the Woodruff Library. It’s one of the most outstanding special collections of post-18th Century Western literature in the world. There is most always an exhibit showing, and you can browse some of the rare books shelves. You can also walk a 360 degree view of campus on the balcony that circles the building 10 stories high. You’ll be able to see the entire city from up there. While you’re in the library, also visit the Matheson Reading room across the bridge in Candler Library.

-Make an appointment with a professor in a department of interest

-have lunch at Everybody’s in the village

-email the admission office and ask if there are any students from your high school/home town who you could email. If not, there’s probably a current student who would be willing to have lunch with you.

-Don’t be afraid to ask random students questions. It happened to me many times…

I’m sure others will have different ideas as well.

I’m a current student, and if you want to really get a feel for freshman life, have lunch at the DUC. It’s a buffet-style lunch with various different stations… certainly not the best food, but I think it will give you a good feel for what it’s like at Emory.

I would also visit Cox Hall-- it’s a food court where most older students have lunch. Unfortunately it’s freezing outside now, but normally it’s really nice to sit at the outdoor tables and enjoy your lunch.

I would also recommend wandering around the quad-- the buildings are all very beautiful. Check out the Carlos Museum, the building was designed by Michael Graves and there’s lots of interesting art and artifacts there- The mummy of Ramses II’s father was there until recently.

Walk into the new Psychology building-- I’m a psych major so maybe I’m biased, but I love the building, it’s aesthetically pleasing but also very functional.

See if someone will let you into one of the freshmen dorms-- Few and Evans are the newest and nicest dorms, although all of them are a lot nicer than your average college dorms.

Also check out the WoodPEC (Woodruff PE Center)-- there’s a huge top floor with all sorts of workout machines and weights, and the swimming pool and rock climbing wall are pretty impressive.

You’ve probably already been to the library on the tour, but if not- definitely check it out. They did a huge renovation lately and it looks incredible… be sure to look at the basement floor and one of the floors of the stacks, like the 7th floor.

Good luck! I’ll let you know if I think of anything else!

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

Doc Cheys is MUCH better and MUCH cheaper.

We’ll agree to disagree then. Everybody’s is an institution and well worth trying (try the pizza crisps or the pizza salads).

See if you can attend one of Professor Deborah Lipstadt’s lectures. My son took her Holocaust class and told me that the students stood and applauded for her at the end of the semester.

If you have the time, take a walk around Lullwater…it’s a very peaceful place to take a break and get away from rigorous academics,or, to go and study in peace and quiet.

Eat at both the dining hall and Cox food court. The food is actually very good, but students will complain that it gets repetitive. True. True on every campus. But at least it’s repetitive good food.

I haven’t minded the DUC so far…

My favorite professor is Jonathan Master. He is a genius.
