What to see? River Cruise Amsterdam to Budapest

I’m thinking of tagging Amsterdam to the beginning of my trip next year, I booked in 2020 and had to cancel it. I want to see to at least see some tulips at its peak.

We did this cruise in 2019. The extras we did: the Kinderdijik Windmills, the Marksburg Castle which I thoroughly enjoyed, Salzburg Highlights, Wachau Valley winery (just “okay” honestly), Mozart and Strauss Concert in Vienna, Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, and I wish we had done Munich Highlights at the Regensburg stop. Loved Budapest!
We don’t travel much and this was our first trip to Europe and it was just wonderful. We completely enjoyed it, met some of the most lovely folks and I still think about it fondly and often. Viking treats you very well. Oh, and we did the two day add on at the beginning in Amsterdam where we did the Anne Frank house and the Van Gogh Museum, but we did not make the Rijksmuseum and I highly regret it.

I’ve added Amsterdam and Bruges to my trip next year, I’m rebooking all of the destinations that I booked in 2020 except for Bruges. I save Budapest and Cologne for another year.

We love Bruges. Went there twice but they were daytrips from Brussels. Our kids love Belgium for their many different beers.

I love Bruges. Avoid the torture museum at all costs. Should have known by the name. But I think we paid then realized. Just had to leave quick.

Second the Szechenyi baths! Been there once, want to go back so badly!

My mom got back late last night. She loved the town of Wertheim the best. Very European and great shopping (she loves shopping).

She said a few people on the cruise never got their bags at all for the entire two weeks! Definitely pack a few sets of clothes just in case. She said they did offer free laundry to the people who never got their bags and those who got them days later.

Thanks for the info. We will pack light for this and try not to check-in luggage.

Bruges is one of my favorite spots. And the chocolate is beyond wonderful. Think I have more pix of chocolate displays than anything else from our trip there. If you like beer Belgium has 650 varieties. If anyone makes it to Brussels go to the Museum of Musical Instruments.

Unfortunately or fortunately we don’t drink alcohol anymore, but we love chocolate, my husband loves dark chocolate. So it will be close to heaven for him.

@artloversplus i see that your cruise is next week.

I’m hearing reports that the Rhine is closed due to low water levels.

If you haven’t left yet, do you have any reports on what is going on with your river cruise?

Good luck on everything. It sounds like it’s HOT  in Europe right now.

Thanks for your concern. Unfortunately, we have no recourse, perhaps that is why the fare is so low. We are aware of the low water level, it happens every year. It is the risk we have to take for river cruises. I guess we will be bused around, too bad.
