What to self-study?

I'm taking AP Chem and AP USH and AP Calc AB as a junior. Which APs should I self-study? My school doesn't offer other APs.

Here are ones I'm thinking about self-studying:

AP Lang/Lit
AP Psych
AP Calc BC
AP Macro&Micro
AP Bio

Is this going to be work? What books should I use for each of the courses? What do you guys feel about the difficulty level of each course?

AP Lang/Lit - Don’t self-study this, it won’t work…

AP Psych - Just buy the Barron’s prep book and read it a couple times, once right before the exam.

AP Calc BC - I would just get a textbook and read it and do practice problems. Most books used to teach Calc AB have BC material.

AP Micro and Macro - IDK

AP Bio - The new exam is highly based off of knowledge of experiments, so I would not self-study it.

I guess my choices are limited. What should I self-study then? Are history APs fun to self-study?

Self-study Calculus BC and Psychology. You could also probably do one of the economics if you were feeling really dedicated. I wouldn’t do a history AP considering you are already in APUSH and they take a lot of reading, writing, and hard work. Bio is possible I suppose now that the prep books know what it is about, but just be prepared.

You could self-study AP Lang fairly easily IMO because there’s not necessarily a lot to learn (as there would be in APUSH or AP Bio) as long as you become familiar with the essay styles.

AP Lang/Lit - maybe
AP Psych - maybe
AP Calc BC - no, you can’t take both AB & BC in same year.
AP Macro&Micro - no
AP Bio - no

I recommend Psych and US Gov. I self-studied both this past year and got a 5 in Psych and a 4 in US Gov with a fair amount of studying.

@4kidsdad You can self-study BC and take the BC test. You get an AB subscore.

I would self-study Calculus BC if you are naturally good at math! You know 60% of the material from your AB class, so you don’t have to learn as much as you would for another course.

Psychology is pretty easy to self-study as well and you almost always get credit for it in college - a lot more often than you would for AP Comp Gov or Human Geography.

Psych, envi science, human geo, US History

Lang/lit depend most upon background. If you’re an avid reader of classics/poetry than lit isn’t hard and you probably know how could of a writer you are including how well you can write arguments. They’re both doable even if you aren’t an avid reader but if you aren’t Lit really requires reading of books that aren’t a prep book (specifically read a couple books that often show on free response questions as possible good books to use). Prep books still help just don’t use only them for the tests. Lang as already mentioned know the essay types they want and be used to writing them quickly and well.

@jmon117 that’s what I wanted to do.

People have told me that the two AP Econs are fairly easy and don’t require a class. Does anyone have experience self-studying AP Micro/Macro?

My school doesn’t have neither AP Comp Gov nor AP Human Geo so I don’t know if I will be able to take the AP exams…or if they’re even worth studying since I’m not interested in Human Geo nor Government studies. Are those scores still nice to have?

Why OP is taking AB, not BC in school?

Some schools, like mine, only offer AB.

See [College Admissions Advisors Answer Questions on ?Rigor? for High School Students | International College Counselors](College Admissions Advisors Answer Questions on “Rigor” for High School Students)

So if your school only offers AB, it would be ok for many college admissions officers.

I self-studied both Macro and Micro, and I very easily got 5’s on both. I also self-studied AP Bio (with the new format) and got a 5. But self-studying AP Bio is REALLY hard.
