what to take for freshman dorm room

My daughter will be heading to Vanderbilt next month. The guidelines for "acceptable" items for the dorm rooms is pretty limiting. Does anyone have advice on what is great to take and works in the dorm? Items great for storage, is there really NO ability to hang things over the door?, and on the walls?, besides computer, frig and clock any other good to have electronics?, what else did you or your child find they used a lot as a freshman?
austinmomto3 is online now

My friend who’s going to be a sophomore said that an alarm clock was good. She personally recommended the iHome since both of us have iPhones that we can charge on there + an alarm clock + a stereo for music, but any will do.

She also suggested 3M hooks for hanging things, and Sticky Tack for posters and the like.

thanks-did your friend take a tv?, microwave?, was she in a lofted bed situation and if so is there any place in the room for bins…to store stuff?

Yes, she had a tv/microwave/fridge as her major appliances. And she apparently did this “half-lofting” thing that I’ve heard about a lot but can’t exactly picture in my head… She lofted them far enough off the ground to put bin from the Container Store underneath, and she said it was a really good place to store extra clothes your closet can’t fit. Everyone gets a closet and a dresser, but they apparently have minimal space.

austinmomto3 thanks for asking about the storage bins, I was just talking to my mom about this and wondering if i need extra storage bins or even having room to have them present

do you guys think a 32-37 inch tv is too big to share or even for a single dorm room?

you can fit a lot under the lofted beds. Extra drawers, big storage bins, mini fridge and microwave. Behind the things you need, you can stow things like suitcases, boxes etc that you won’t need access to. We picked up some cheap stackable shelves to put on top of the desk and dresser, so there was more surface space. We picked them up at target and assembled them there.

Anybody planning on buying bamboo towels or sheets?
These supposedly are innately antibacterial,anti-mold and are supposed to dry much faster than cotton towels and even though they are thinner (taking up less room!) they are supposed to be quite soft.
Is there laundry detergent available to purchase in the laundry rooms? I am trying to minimize wasting space on extra supplies.
Thanks

You can buy laundry detergent in the campus stores but it’s WAY overpriced. Better to get it at Kroger or Target.

I brought the fridge and TV, and my roommate brought the microwave and DVD player. I had an over-the-door shoe rack, but sinc ethe closets don’t have doors anyway, I put it on one side of my lofted bed. (I definitely recommend delofting, it was a pain to climb just to take a nap) Most rooms should definitely have enough room to deloft your bed and most of my friends had chairs and.or futons in their rooms. Other items I recommend are a shelf you can attach to your bed, alarm clock for sure, thin long storage containers (can either go under your bed or in your closest) and a 3 draw organizer. My roommate had one and I really regretted not buying one before my parents went home. It was just really convenient for snacks, first aid , and other miscellaneous things that you don’t want cluttered around but easily accessible.

VandyPanda 32-37 in (flat screen I assume) is pretty huge but there were definitely enough students with them, but it’s highly doubtful you’ll have a single lol I think I had a 22 in flat screen and I thought that was a perfect size.

Congrats everyone! I hope you and your child love Vandy!

there is plenty of room to store stuff, however to all of the anxious parents out there I would strongly recomend waiting to purchase certain items like storage bins and stuff until you actually get there and see the room because it makes your decision much more informed.

Also a 32-37 inch TV is not too big at all, it is awesome, I had a 37 inch HD Samsung TV last year and it was dope, next year my roomate has a 42 inch SONY HDTV, gonna make for some insane drunk HALO sessions. Also, be there will be current Vandy students including myself on scene for move in to help you guys move in and you can ask us all the questions you want.

Dirthog here’s a question, could you guys help me lug up a fridge (4.6 cu. ft) if the dorms do have not elevators? =]

Man a 42 inch! thats awesome! my bro told me to get a 42 inch because everyone at his college has one.
I used to have a small one about 22 inch but im blind as a bat and i cant see anything on the screen everything is soo small =]

I heard the school place usually place transfer rising junior in kissam dorms is that true???

as far as I know, every dorm in the common has elevators.

I wont be living the the commons. im not a freshmen =[

I dont know if move crew helps transfers, not really sure but I dont think we do, but I garuntee you will find someone willing to help you around just ask when you get there.
