I'm a sophomore. My high school doesn't offer AP courses; however, it does offer courses at a local college for seniors. I plan on taking those, but when college application time comes around, where do I note on the application that my school didn't offer AP courses (and that's why I didn't take them)? In addition, is it a mark against a student to not have taken AP courses even if the school didn't offer them? I know it shouldn't be, but does a lack of APs at first glance make admission officers frown?

It's not. Each school sends out a report to each of the colleges detailing its programs and available classes. You should not have any problem as long as you are in the most rigorous curriculum possible.

The college courses for high school credit will work well when applying to selective colleges--lots of students do that to challenge themselves.

You can always self-study if you want challenges.

Dual Enrollment at your local community college would be great

Your counselor will send a school report with his/her letter of recommendation explaining the course offerings of your school, so no need to worry. In fact, doing well in classes at a local community college will work to your advantage, as there is usually less grade inflation than an AP class. Also, you should ask the colleges you are planning to apply to about transfer credits. You might be able to place out of some intro classes with the credits from the college classes you take in high school.

I am in the exact same boat. No APs but tons of credits at the local comm. coll. The lack of APs will be on your high school's transcript they send colleges, but have your GC mention it as well. Also, don't count on your com. coll. credits transferring to out-of-state schools. Also, it is my firm opinion that self studying for APs would be a waste, your time could be much better spent on another EC. Lastly, if you are a rising senior, its too late to self study APs in time for admissions.

CC courses, self study APs, online courses such as flvs.net
