Hi everyone! I'll be a first year in Echols this August and, as the title suggests, I'm not sure which classes to sign up for or how many I should take, since I don't have any requirements. I'm interested in genetic counseling (psychology/biology) and I'd like to continue taking Spanish. I just don't know where to start with my classes. I got 5's in AP Biology, English Language, and U.S. History, and I'm waiting on scores in Psychology, English Lit, Government, Calc BC, and Spanish Lang. I got a 730 on the Spanish subject test. Any advice on what to take next year?

Wait, are you living in Echols or are you an Echols scholar? Two completely different things.

And have during your first year. Take classes that interest you. Take some psych classes, some bio classes, some sociology classes. Just explore.

@bigwill thanks for the response. I’m an Echols Scholar, which is why I’m not sure exactly what to take. I’ll look into some sociology classes in addition to psych and bio. Do you think I should take Chem 101?

It’s kind of an interesting dilemma… You have so much freedom that maybe it’s too much.
I think you should definitely check out the list they’ll give at orientation of the best classes around grounds, assuming they still give that list. It had things like bioethics on it, really cool classes. Enjoy your time at UVa, you’ve got 8 semesters to take everything so as long as your first semester is balanced, you made good choices.

No problem, Sarah! And congrats on being an Echols scholar!

I’ll piggyback on hazelorb; check out the list of best classes. And don’t worry about fulfilling a major; you will have enough time.
