Most dorms will have some type of corkboard to allow you to attach things.

However, just in case your dorms don’t have those: use “imagination.” That is, get creative about not having to hang things on walls, and if it’s unnecessary, just imagine something’s there instead of actually having something.

I’ve lived two semesters in a dorm and a year in an apartment. In all this time, I haven’t had the need to hang anything!

I had a roommate who hung her corkboard up with those strong poster tape things. They have pulley tabs and a double-sided sticky surface. One issue with them: while they come off cement walls perfectly fine, they completely massacre everything else. My side of the room was safe since I had cement, but her side ended up with gaping holes at the end of the year.

I use the 3M velcro. Attach half of it to your poster/board/etc. and then the other to the wall and they peel off of both easily. Sticky tack, you know what your third grade teacher used, works great for lesser weight things as well.

mounting tape works very well. I used it mainly for posters because they wouldn’t stay up otherwise, but it also works for dry erase boards and such.

3M hooks and tape. I also had to use gorilla tape for a few things last year, but you have to be careful with that stuff as it REALLY doesn’t like to come off. It will, but whatever you put it on needs to be strong or else something you don’t mind throwing away at the end of the year.

Hmm…I made use of the cork strip in our room last year for a lot.

A lot of people did damage to their walls with double-sided tape…peeled the paint right off. We had a fun time spackling and painting those areas of the walls before we left…better than paying the damage fee.

COMMAND STRIPS! Just make sure that the non-sticky tab part is reachable (you shouldn’t have to peel away the item from the wall in order to get to it–that’s how I messed up my wall) and that you pull straight in the direction of the tab when removing them.

Hi, Son on opposite coast is checking out of freshman dorm on his own. Most of his posters came down ok (he used 3M tape and stick-ups). But in two places, it pulled the paint off. Any suggestions for a quick fix, or some way to make it look better?

Hire a homeless person to hold it there when you’re awake and in the room in exchange for letting him/her sleep under your bed at night and occasionally sneaking them into the dining hall.
