I'm wondering what's the typical manner of dress in NYC for botht he bitterest winters and the brightest summers?

If you or your children has gone to Columbia (or a NY school), please tell you what you bought for them to get ready. (Could include price, too).

New York is an extreme city! When it’s hot, it’s HOT and when it’s cold, it’s freezing. Your kid will probably dress summer-like up until late September. By October, autumn will kick in and his/her attire will switch to jeans and he/she will take off her flip flops. And as early as mid-november, it will be freezing. Do not hesitate to stock up on hoodies and gloves. In any other state it’s unfashionable to wear scarves or gloves even when it’s cold out, but in NYC it’s just stupid not too. Your child may feel awkward or nerdy all bundled up, but those skyscrapers retain temperature like no other and the winters are BITTER! I’m from upstate, but I go down a few times a month so I know the weather patterns pretty well!

Hahahaa I don’t recommend a “gigantic long trench coat” because it just seems kind of sketchy. American Eagle sells great men’s jackets that are fashionable too! Only thing is, they’re really expensive unless you buy them in late January when the stores are clearing out on winter apparel. As for the snow, I haven’t noticed anything of global warming porportions lol. This past winter there was a momentous 5 day snow storm that closed schools all over the north east but I wouldn’t worry too much. Moreover, snow in the city is never a problem because our tax dollars ensure clear side walks for pedestrians :)

You don’t need to “stock up on” anything. If you’re building a wardrobe, you’re better off with a range of clothes and should get 1 of various items.

He’ll be awkward and nerdy if he’s in awkward and nerdy clothes. Many people in NYC wear fashionable winter clothes.

You sound a bit clueless about clothes, not that there’s anything bad per se about that. We don’t know what you look like and what you’d look suitable in. It’s probably best for you to ask a real-life friend to go shopping with you.

New Yorkers have access to great fashion, and they wear it. Campus tends to allow people to walk around in pajamas with little embarrassment. Conversely, there will be tons of rich kids who are wearing the latest styles every season. It is really a mixed bag, and every individual needs to decide for themselves how they want to look. There is certainly not a “look” that pervades campus such as preppy or hipster.

Like everyone else said, New York experiences 4 distinct seasons.

My S, a senior, loves his black wool J. Crew P coat that he got on sale a few years ago for winter wear. Most of the time post and pre-summer it is hooded sweatshirts for around campus. I think J Crew goes out to the clubs. He also has a Burbank trench coat for interviewing, obtained from a friend. But yes, NY has all the seasons.

Usually I only spend $200 on clothing each year. Actually I really don’t. Maybe every two years.
Just address appropriately. New York is just any place else: you address according to the temperature and weather condition!

polo and khaki shorts in the fall/spring/summer, north face coat and jeans and long-sleeve shirt in the winter. though last winter i just wore sweatpants 24/7 since i usually had gym clothes on underneath.
