What to wear to an audition?

NJTheatreMom, totally adorable dress! I also loved the '50s style dress.

The only thing I would add is to make sure that whatever you wear, you can move in it (really move, like jumping jacks, push ups, etc) while not exposing your butt, boobs, belly, etc. Make sure bra straps don’t show and underwear or boxers don’t show. Make sure you’re not having to tug anything up or down. You never want to be distracted or to distract others with your clothes.

If you’re a girl, do not choose a dress that’s too short! No dresses or skirts that barely cover your underwear. Some girls seem to be under the impression that their job is to seduce the panel–no. Personally, I would avoid the ‘baby doll’ type of dress. If you wear it, you will look like a lot of other girls, that’s all I can say.

On the other extreme, don’t be too frumpy. I don’t think that’s going to be a problem here, but I’ve seen kids audition in sweatshirts, bulky sweaters that slide off one shoulder, baggy jeans.

Footwear is also really important. Girls usually wear two inch (around two inch) comfortable heels because it extends the line of their legs. Boys shouldn’t wear dirty sneakers.

Remember to practice in your audition clothes, particularly the shoes you’ll wear.

This isn’t discussed, but definitely hair needs to be out of your face, pinned back if it has a tendency to obscure any part of the face. Guys should make sure their bangs are not covering any part of their eyes. You never want to fiddle with your hair while auditioning.

Please keep us updated on how your audition went :)

Just to clarify I am not in the habit of wearing extremely short clothes - I have to buy clothes that look extremely short on a model as I am extremely short myself (for example the spotted dress goes to just below my knee).

I am going shopping with my Mom tomorrow and will take all of your great advice into account

Also, I don’t know whether to post this in a separate thread but seeing as Connections mentioned some of the extra things you might be asked to do in an audition:
When I emailed the director of the program about the requirements he described the audition as ‘an informal affair’. This term is confusing - has anyone had any experience with this type of audition before?

I bet he said this to help you stay comfortable and relaxed and means they might want to chat with you and try and get to know you a little.
He just means it won’t be structured and rigid.

Also, it will probably be in a room, not in a theater with you on the stage and the faculty in the audience area.

zoenatasha, I’m sorry, I wasn’t implying that you were going to do all those things! I meant that as general advice for anyone who might have the same questions as you, in case other people were reading this thread and wondered.

Best of luck. I’m sure you have excellent taste. :-)
